/usr on separate partition doesn't work any more since quite some time, boot-level actions need files from there. (The most prominent culprit is udev.) Since when? I have a separate /usr on my ThinkPad, which is running 11.0. Also, most of my systems run everything, except /boot, from LVM.
http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/separate-usr-is-broken Even though specifics are different between Fedora and openSUSE, the basic principle remains the same, as this is a problem inherited from upstream. The issue is not systemd-specific; systemd is just the messenger. This was also discussed half a year ago on opensuse-devel. See http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.suse.opensuse.devel/28364/focus=28379. Some nice flames (and also some insightful comments) on this topic can also be read at LWN.net: http://lwn.net/Articles/429695/ In both discussions, you'll find (1) people who want to keep /usr separate and are suprised by reality, and (2) others who tell them that this (2a) just doesn't work that way any more (e.g., Kay Sievers on the openSUSE side), (2b) that they actually don't care enough to do something against it personally, and (2c) get flamed for it. Typical shoot-the-messenger syndrom, if you ask me.
