I have two computers on a local subnet 10.1.1.200 - computer1 "this is a server with barely a monitor" 10.1.1.201 - dev1 "this is my computer with a big graphic screen that I want to access computer1 from" I tried from computer1 issuing the command: xhost +dev1 and from dev1: xhost +computer1 (not sure if I needed both) Then, when I ssh into computer1 from dev1, and in that remote session do a DISPLAY=dev1:0.0 xclock I get the clock on my local screen just like I expect. How can I run a full kde session (startx like) on my dev1 system? are there any limitations to this? I'm thinking after I get this working I can stick the server (computer1) in a closet and still use the nice admin stuff from SUSE. (by the way, both are SUSE 7.2) Thanks, -Peter

A simpler way, which would give you encryption, would be to use ssh -X computer1. Then your DISPLAY will be set automatically to show on dev1's screen.

I assume X, kde and kdm have been installed on computer1. Edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers and look for the line that starts with :0, and put a # at the start if it. This means that when you start kdm, it won't start on computer1's display, only on remotes. Now edit /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config and look for the line DisplayManager.requestPort: 0 and put a # at the start of it. Start kdm (rcxdm start) on computer 1. Now, on dev1, from the command line, do X -query computer1
Thanks,
-Peter

You may even boot dev1 directly into a kdm login, (take a look at the README in package xdmsc; it's in both German and English): dev1 should boot into runlevel 3. dev1:/etc/inittab should have the following line at about line 82, uncomment it (remove # in front): 7:3:respawn:+/etc/init.d/rx tty7 The following shell variables should be set in dev1:/etc/rc.config: START_RX=yes" RX_XDMCP="query" RX_RHOST="<fully qualified name of computer1>" That does it - at least for me. Hope it works for you. Regards Vagn Bjørno Jensen

Hello Peter, I have also a server set up with SuSE 7.2. However, I am just using FVWM2 on it to keep things light. I have installed the VNCserver and also Webmin-0.87. I have created a link on my *good* desktop to summon the VNCserver on the server machine if I want to actually see its desktop. (I know some frown on GUI on a server, but......) You have to change the VNC script to bring up the server's desktop instead of putrid TWM. Between VNC and Webmin, there's nothing I can't do to the server. It is, btw, a 233MMX w/80M RAM and all is fine. This is by no means a *production* machine, just used for a home LAN to provide internet sharing and firewalling, Samba server, webserver and some file sharing. Having tried several other arrangements (e-smith, StartUP linux, etc.) I am happiest with this setup. Can't beat SuSE! -- TRBishop tb64710@alltel.net SuSE 7.2 Pro
