[opensuse] RE: DVD creation software
Hi, new to the list. Left over from windows, one of my last nagging problems is getting avi (mpeg) files to DVD's. I'm looking for something more than a script - like a package - to do the task (I don't need it to handle menus) Any suggestions ? (currently opensuse 10.3) Thanks, Duaine -- Duaine Hechler Piano, Player Piano, Pump Organ Tuning, Servicing & Rebuilding Associate Member of the Piano Technicians Guild Reed Organ Society Member St. Louis, MO 63034 (314) 838-5587 dahechler@charter.net www.hechlerpianoandorgan.com -- Home & Business user of Linux - 9+ years -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you're under KDE I highly recommend the usable (albeit a bit unpolished) KDE DVD Author Wizard. I use it often. http://dvdauthorwizard.sourceforge.net/view.php/page/Voorpagina The only trick is to hand-edit the breaks between chapters on long videos. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Another, maybe a bit more polished is MANDVD which does the job, even converts *.avi and *.vob files and puts them into a menued DVD. Makes chapters easy or creates chapters every 'n' minutes and allows thumbnails to be put into the menu for the chapter breaks...though that is a bit of work. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Very cool, I didn't even know this existed. I'd been using any2dvd and any2vob prior to 10.3, but there's something wrong with the transcode commands in the script that breaks the whole thing. The author doesn't seem to be maintaining it any more, and I'm not quite good enough with scripting to figure it out. ManDVD seems a good replacement, though it doesn't seem to convert as many video types. Thanks! Not sure I understand what you are asking. Are you asking about a backup program that writes to DVDs? If so, maybe Kdar. If you mean backing up DVDs, I would use k3b.

True, but if I want to save some space, pulling the raw video files doesn't reduce the size. Jim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

video don't reduce if you don't remove something (menus, subtitles, quality...) and you will gain very little video is already a very compressed format jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I beg to differ; k9copy will reduce a 9 GB video DVD to fit on a 4.7 GB DVD without any problem at all. The quality is reduced slightly, yes, but if I'm watching on my laptop on a plane, the reduction in quality isn't so much that it's a problem, at least not for me. so you choose to reduce quality, this was not obvious in the initial post. so far so good, no problem if this fixes your needs on a laptop screen, divx are enough (IMHO) and only 700Mb in size for a film... but better dl them because the creation is very long jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Depending on hardware and length of the film, it can be done in 40 minutes or less. Mplayer usually takes less than 10 minutes to rip the film from the DVD and dump it in an MPEG, and then it may take another 20 to 30 minutes for ffmpeg to actually transcode the MPEG to an xvid AVI. I automated the ripping and transcoding process, putting them in separate scripts. A copy of the scripts are available through here: <URL:http://www.davjam.org/~davjam/video/index.htm> The ripping script I wrote runs as root, which isn't the best of ideas, but it does save be from having to keep entering the root password to mount and umount the DVDs. I use avidemux-qt to take the video off the dvd and generate a single mpeg, then I normally just copy the mpeg to a data dvd. If the file is still to big I use auto dvd or auto vcd to reduce it. Simply select the first main video VOB and it automatically loads the rest. Tell him to contact the company and ASK for a Linux port. Yeah, that's a tough area. You almost need a custom program to get *exactly* what you want. In fact, I'm writing one for my father-in-law right now. He works in publishing so it needs to run on a Mac yet I'm writing in Linux. I've chosen java, since mono has little-to-no support for those who've taken in the kool-aid. Here it is on his Mac... http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/20080128_GERRY_Mac1.png ...and today on on my laptop... http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/20080525_gerry_add_contact.jpg Not as many features, but tailored to exactly how he wants/needs it.
