[opensuse] Ctrl Alt F7 does not return from tty to x11 session
Hi! Finally after many years of absence I change from Debian /Ubuntu back to what is "now" opensuse (it was really a long time ago :) ) and let me just say that I am very impressed and satisfied with the overall experience and appearance of opensuse. But I have an issue with switching back from a tty session to the x11 session via CTRL-ALT-F7 key kombination. Switching from the x11 sessions to one of the ttys works fine. So I was wondering whether this is a known issue (I did not find anything similar in bugzilla)? And how could I easily access the keyboard mapping within the tty, just to quickly check if the keymap in the tty is the same as in the x11 session. I am on opensuse 11.4 with a macbook pro 6.2 and I remember that I had some trouble with the Fn keys and used a hid-apple kernel module under ubuntu, but as far as I remember the key mapping was consistent. (A possible related issue that sometimes that monitors hangs on tty after suspend to ram, not getting back to the x11 session) Any pointers to nail down the problem are highly apprecitated! This happened to me once, and i still don't know why. At that time, while in tty-land, I went through the available terminals with <alt><right>, and eventually, not at the expected position, i found my X11 session. Didn't happen again, ever, so no chance to figure out what caused this.

are you looking for the info provided by "setxkbmap -print" ?

It is possible that you X11 session is not on tty7; try <ctrl><alt><f8> or <ctrl><alt><f9>. I have restarted X and found the new session occasionally on tty8 rather than the normal and expected tty7. And this is probably my own fault for fiddling with more than one desktop at a time.

It is possible that you X11 session is not on tty7; try <ctrl><alt><f8> or <ctrl><alt><f9>.
Oh, I was a bit "overprecise" I meant to say that the "ALT-CTRL-F<1-8>" key combination does not work at all, so I cannot switch between tty, nothing happens when I use it. So my suspicion is that for some reasons the keyboard layout changes when I switch from an x11 session to a tty since at least I can change *from* the KDE sessions to the tty, but back to or between the the tty. But I have actually no clue what is going on and that's just a blind guess. Any hints are welcome! Cheers, Andre

Then there is no way to get to a tty session as <CTRL><ALT>F[1-6] key combo is the only way to go from an "X11" session to a tty session. Or are you perhaps using VirtualBox and having the problem?

No, I am on a plain opensuse 11.4. The problem is: I can switch _from_ a X11 session to a tty[1-6] via <CTRL><ALT>F[1-6], but not _back_ with the same key combo (nor between the ttys), which is strange. The only way to switch between the ttys or back to X11 is via <COMMAND><LEFT|RIGHT> Sorry for being so imprecise today, was a short night :) BTW, do you know where is this key-combo defined? Speaking of possible, Fedora implemented a change a few versions back to make it likely not on tty7. Booting Fedora directly to runlevel 5 puts X on tty1. If not, X goes to tty7, except during Anaconda installation, which puts X on tty6. It wouldn't surprise me to see anyone on Factory trying to use systemd run into similar schizophrenia. Some keyboards have glitchy shift keys, especially if USB instead of PS/2. Try striking an releasing several quickly, Alt last or only, before trying the combination actually needed (Alt-F7, usually). -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." To switch between ttys you only need <alt><Fn>, only under X you need to use <ctrl><alt><Fn>. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
