Have been reading all of the threads on Stouts, so will give my two cents worth, having been in Germany for 9 1/2 years, and in every western European country in addition (even though I realize the British don't consider themselves European). The best German beer is Weinstephen, which you do not get outsite of sourthern Germany, and it is from the brewery that trains many of the worlds Brewmeisters, including those from Tsingtau in China. We go every Wednesday night to a British Pub in San Jose, and I have to say they have some very good beer, on draught yet, but still am partial to Weinstephen. One thing that really makes the beer also is the atmosphere in the pub or Kneipe(German pub). Been to Ireland, Italy (terrible beer), Spain and Portugal, Belgium, Holland, and others, still like the Wheinstephen better, althought they all have better beers than the US. As far as America, they have no "real" beer, the only thing worth drinking is MGD, and that is marginal. Danes describe it as about the same taste you get when sticking your tongue out of the car window, while doing 180 Kph on the Autobahn ;-) On the other hand, some Danes living in the States like to put ice cubes in it and drink it like lemonade on a hot summers day :-)) Cheers, Brian -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq and the archives at http://lists.suse.com

Some of them don't. The rest of us have considered ourselves European for years; but that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

That's not quite true, IMO. I don't think any US brewery larger than Sam Adams produces vaguely decent beer, but I was in SF a couple of years back; Redhook ESB is a good rich beer, and the Anchor Steam brewery do some good beer (Liberty Ale is one of my favourite bottled beers). And you should certainly be able to get stuff from Sierra Nevada; their Pale Ale is excellent, and almost impossible to get hold of outside the USA. In general, the US has a healthy crop of microbrews producing some very good beers. cheers, Gideon.
Art, I spent 3 years in Germany and loved the beer. The English and Belgian beers are good also. When I returned to the States, I could not drink the stuff that they call beer. So I started the hobby of making my own. I got pretty good at it and can make most styles that I like. When the Microbrews started then we started to get some real beers that are made in the United States. Some of these Microbrewerys can put out as good if not better that even the European beers. Try some I think you will be suprised. Just my $.02 Lloyd Becker Art Fore wrote:

The best German beer is Weinstephen, <snip>
Is that the same as Weinstein, or is it a different brand? I get Weinstein all the time in Ft. Lauderdale, along with Red Hook, Anchor Steam, Sierra Nevada, and others. Harry G
