What is tcp port 139? What does the message: "You still have to ALLOW tcp port 139 on internal, dmz and/or external" mean??? Ted

Part of the NETBIOS services used primarily by Windows boxes for file sharing.

I would imagine it means if you are keeping a windows network, tho why you would let it on the DMZ or External.. 139 broadcasts "I'm a windows network /machine come and use me" or code to that effect <vbg> Most of us don't want our boxes set up that way.. so perhaps you might want to consider that as a reason NOT to have it on a DMZ or Firewall setup... It's only needed if you have to access a poorly setup windows network that only allows a connection from a windows box.... However, that doesn't mean you can't connect to your office windows machine w/ a linux box.. You probably will need to make certain admin knows you are allowed to connect from home or you will be introuble no matter what kind of box you connect w/. -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit

This seriously sounds like a troll type message, although it could be legit. So Ted, why not just go to google and do a search for "port 139" or something similar? I'm not trying to be totally rude here, but some of the questions that come up in this list... people can't even search the list archives nor google. I realize that some of the *new* users to linux are overwhelmed with the ton of docs and faqs, but ... it will help you in the long run. Btw, it's not like I'm NOT willing to help people, but at least put in *some* effort. :) Regards, Dana

This is a message I *have* seen and I believe it comes out of the setup for samba. It would be true under certain circumstances. I ignored it for my internal LAN. But it is a legit message and question.

From my boot.msg (SuSE 8.2): (...) Starting Firewall Initialization (phase 2 of 3) Warning: detected activated samba, enabling FW_SERVICE_SMB! Indeed, it is safe to ignore this msg. Only if one wants to grant guests access to the samba server, one needs to open that port. Cheers, Leen

Unless you are using your box in conjunction with a windBloZe network dont allow port 139 .. i have been watching recently and lots of script kiddie types seem to be attacking port 139 so clamp it down tight (or redirect it up the attacking scriptkiddies butt with the national power grid attached one down lots to go) ..
