[opensuse] Question on KDM
Dear listmembers, I am (AFAIK) bound to using KDM rather than i. e. using SDDM because I need two in parallel X11 - sessions running on tty7 and tty8 in my case. The disadvantage right now: because the resolution of my display is quite high (3840x2160) the fonts and the graphics of the login display are *very* small (too small for my old eyes :-)) Anyone having a solution on how to enlarge the size of the KDM login - window? Thank you for looking into this, take care Dieter Jurzitza -- ----------------------------------------------------------- Dr.-Ing. Dear Nomiya - San, arrigato go sai mas, but I did not find a way to realize any change. Even modifying kdmrc seems to have no impact at all. Will search on and will report my findings later. Maybe enlightenment behaves different in this regard or I did not find the right commands for xrdb to modify the behavior accordingly. Thanks again, best Dieter Jurzitza Am Montag, 30. Hello Daniel, I tried to edit /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc, but found meanwhile that suse keeps for unclear reasons /var/adm/kdm/kdmrc.sysconfig - which is sourced, too and seems to override some of the settings in /usr/share/kde4/ config/kdm/kdmrc It has been recommended in the net that one should replace the file in /var/ adm by a link to /dev/null ... Will test soon and report my findings. Thank you for coming back, take care Dieter Am Dienstag, 31. März 2020, 15:35:00 CEST schrieb Daniel Spannbauer:

The kdmrc is auto-generated to get the settings form /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager into the config. /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/read_sysconfig.sh does this. It generates /var/adm/kdm/kdmrc.sysconfig, which is read by kdm. I don't think that the /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc is read be kdm anymore. For me I've created a own version of read_sysconf. But you have to make sure that you always have a backup of it cause an update will overwrite it. Hello Daniel, this clarifies a lot and really helps ... but in this case they should have moved kdmrc away entirely IMHO. Why keep a config file that is not sourced any more, leading people in the totally wrong direction, make them wonder why nothing happens in case they modify it ..... No, I need not understand all and everything. Thanks! Dieter Am Mittwoch, 1. April 2020, 09:00:43 CEST schrieb Daniel Spannbauer:

Hello Daniel, but stop : the kdmrc - file is definitively sourced as well. I am using two parallel kdm - login screens (this is why I use kdm at all), one for me, one for my wife. tty7 and tty8, respectively. That configuration needs to be in /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc - so, it is sourced, I have to put it there to make that work. Take care Dieter Am Mittwoch, 1. Anyway, I'm sorry, I misunderstood your environment. The solution for your use, maight be setting the lower resolution. Dear listmembers, dear Nomiya-San, first of all: my Japanese capabilities are _very_ limited. But I knew from your name that you are Japanese so I thougt it to be polite to say "thank you" in Japanese language. That's all about it. The resolution of the "regular" kdm login theme is simply not appropriate for highres monitors. Therefore you have to adjust. Because my monitor comes with 3840x2560 pixels I simply scaled up by a factor of two. Further explanation below. After switching to kdm kdm could not find Elarun.png because openSUSE doesn't distribute it (any more?). In this regard it can be stated that kdm as distributed with leap 15.1 is broken. So you have to download it from the internet (just search for "Elarun" and you will find it quickly). Put this file into /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/elarun/Elarun.png Secondly: there is no need at all to fiddle around with kdmrc or the like. The only thing of importance is found in /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/elarun 1.) move this directory to a new name, say /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/elarun.lowres 2.) open all *.png - files in it with gimp and scale them up by a factor of two in x- and y- direction except Elarun.png. Save those files into a new directory called /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/elarun.highres Elarun.png can simply be copied over to this directory and need not be scaled. 3.) copy all not - png - files from /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/elarun.lowres to /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/elarun.highres 4.) make a softlink from elarun.highres to elarun 5.) Edit elarun.xml, see a patch below I used against my elarun.xml. You can either copy it and patch your file with that patch or you can manually adjust the sizes in your file accordingly. 6.) if you like to have a different background image, simply pick one you like, put it into the above mentioned elarun - directory and put it's name instead of "Elarun.png" into "elarun.xml". Then you will be fine. jpg - files work as well Thank you for looking into this, I will open a bug - report in regards to "Elarun.png", this at least should be part of the distribution. Been making fonts user friendly via kdmrc ever since discovering I could, probably at least 15 years, easier than rebuilding images or locating theming components. And, without any theming, it's a nice compact interface, with all the click targets within comfortably short distances of each other instead of sprawled all over a mostly empty screen. Dear Felix, I see - my comment was somewhat misleading. I did not want to express that modifying kdmrc is inappropriate or difficult by any means. I only had had wanted to express that - for this specific issue - it is simply not necessary. And that there is a bug in the openSUSE kdm configuration IMHO. Take care Dieter Am Mittwoch, 1.
