Setting resolution on widescreen laptop
Hi everybody, I have Acer Aspire 5670 with 15.4" WXGA widescreen monitor. SuSE 10.0 does not detect this monitor correctly and sets the resolution to 800x600. Needless to say, this looks very crappy. The solution usually is to download the screendrivers from ATI, but in this case the screen card is not yet supported by ATI (Mobility Radeon X1400). Trying to change the resolution from Sax2 is a fruitless exercise, as it just keeps defaulting back to 800x600. Does anybody know of any way in which I can manually change the resolution to 1280x800 (as is used by windoze). Please bear in mind that I am not very experienced with tweaking config files. Thanks Marius

you should be able to set your default mode in sax2 use LCD->1280x800 monitor -- Marek Chlopek
Thanks, but this gives me the same problem. No change. The next time I
start up Sax2, the monitor is still ->LCD 1280x800, but the resolution
has changed back to 800x600, and the screen still looks the same.

as a root and on console: go to /etc/X11 and exit xorg.conf: remove all other than 1280x800 rows in section "Screen" nb. make a copy of xorg.conf before editing! -- Marek Chlopek

Hi Marek, Thanks for your help so far. I have 2 problems with the advice. First, the "Screen" section does not contain any reference to the resolution (I have added my xorg.conf at the end of this message). The "Modes" section contain some resolution, so I decided to delete all irrelevant resolutions here. Problem 2, as soon as I restart the X-server, xorg.conf is back to the way it was before I edited it. Any ideas? Thanks Marius

Marius,
You use framebuffer. Start sax2 and try to set the LCD monitor!!!
FYI, my config file for X11 attached (Toshiba Satellite A75-S321).

Marek, I think I'm starting to see the problem. Suse does not detect the graphics card correctly, and thus uses the VESA framebuffer device. When I go into Sax2, I get a screen that shows me the "Card" and the "Monitor". The monitor I can change (and have) but the card shows "VESA framebuffer Graphics" and there is no option to change this. Any ideas how I can change the card type? Thanks Marius

http://en.opensuse.org/ATI_Driver_HOWTO Hi David, Thanks, but I already tried this before I posted. Main problem is that my card (X1400) is not supported by the ATI drivers yet. You also mention this in your article. The result of installing the driver is a nice blank screen.
I once had to patch the vesa bios to allow SUSE to get 1400x800 resolution on a toshiba laptop.. It seams the bios did not have a Vesa setting for it, and therefor SUSE would not choose this resolution. There was a mini program that copied the vesa bios to memory, and made the patch. It needed to be run before X-Widnows... Unfortunately, I no longer have nor remember what/where the program is... Maybe this hint will help you find it in Google... There was a new driver launched in the last couple of days (8.24....) which ATi states supports some of the Mobility X1n00 chipsets, might be worth checking to see if you have that driver, and updating if necessary, I first saw it posted on SUSELinuxsupport yesterday, so it might be brand-spanking-new... ;-) Dave -- "I got to go figure," the tenant said.
