system does not have an /etc/gpm.conf file, and my /dev directory does not have an entry for /dev/gpmdata. How do I create /etc/gpm.conf and /dev/gpmdata? Is there a better/easier way to set up gpm? Thanks for your help.
Assuming that gpm.rpm is installed, switch to runlevel 3, and configure gpm using yast, till gpm works. If your mouse is problematic, you might have to disable booting up in graphics mode (ie, start in runlevel 3 directly), and reboot - I once had such problems.
After gpm is configured, configure X using "sax2 --gpm --reinit".
This is a procedure I had to use with suse 7.x, I assume it still works with 8.1
