Hi everybody-- I'm running 8.1 on a Sony Vaio. After booting, the system doesn't recognize my CDrom, or perhaps I don't know what to call it... However, doing a cdrecord -scanbus, I get the following: cdrecord -scanbus Cdrecord 1.11a28 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jvrg Schilling Linux sg driver version: 3.2.0 Using libscg version 'schily-0.6' scsibus0: 0,0,0 0) 'Sony ' 'MSC-U01N ' '1.00' Removable Disk 0,1,0 1) * 0,2,0 2) * 0,3,0 3) * 0,4,0 4) * 0,5,0 5) * 0,6,0 6) * 0,7,0 7) * scsibus2: 2,0,0 200) 'Y-E DATA' 'USB-FDU ' '3.12' Removable Disk 2,1,0 201) * 2,2,0 202) * 2,3,0 203) * 2,4,0 204) * 2,5,0 205) * 2,6,0 206) * 2,7,0 207) * So, it would appear that the system sees it and the floppy. I can get to the floppy (/dev/sdb). How do I get my CD to work? Is there something I can do to find out what /dev entry it has or should have? Thanks for your attention. --John

Obvious canidates are /dev/sda and /dev/sr0. You may also want to check and see if you have /dev/dvd, /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrecorder entries and see where they symlink. THanks to those of you who suggested /dev/sr0. THat's what I used to use, and it stopped working. But, since posting my first message, it's started working again. <Twilight Zone music here> I've got two CD devices. /dev/sr0 is the one hanging off the USB, and it's now working (again). cdrecord -scanbus does find the PCMCIA drive (see below, it's on scsibus0) but I can't seem to find it under /dev. /dev/sda just gives error message when I try a mount. Look for /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1 for reading. If you are trying to record with cdrecord use "dev=0,0,0" -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
