2.2.18 from FTP site won't boot - IDE problems
I installed the 2.2.18 kernel from the FTP site and it would not boot on my system. I did this at the same time I installed the 2.4.2 kernel, so the steps were identical. I went back to the kernle from the distribution, and the system came right up. It seems to be hanging on the IDE initialization. I have a DVD IDE drive and all the rest of my secondary storage is SCSI. It goes through an attempt to sync the bus, or something similar, it reports a failure to determine bus speed and a fallback to 33mhz, then it shows something about an IDE controler at irq 14 and just sits there. I'm NOT trying to fix this. I'm just making the info available to all. If you can build it, I can break it. Steve
Steve, I got to the very same point with 2.2.18 kernel from the ftp site. I just switched to 2.4.2 after that and didn't spend any more time on it. Quite frustrating experience. -Kastus On Thu, Mar 08, 2001 at 10:31:04PM -0500, Steven T. Hatton wrote:

You know it _would_ help if you guys could tell us just _which_ kernel you're talking about. Last time I checked there were quite a lot of different kernels on ftp.suse.com...

It was k_deflt-2.2.18-36.i386.rpm dated Mar 2. Now problems with 2.2.18 kernel from 7.1 Pro CDs. The kernel I'm using now is from k_deflt_24-2.4.2-4.i386.rpm I tried to install 2.2.18 kernel with yast1. Hardware is FIC PA2013 motherboard with AMD-K6/2-500, FUJITSU MPE3204AT, ATA DISK drive. -Kastus
