Hi I installed SuSE 8.2 Pro on a box with a SMC 83C170QF EtherPower II 10/100 network card. During the installation the network card was detected and I was able to configure it and also to do a first online update to the system. After the first reboot, I see that the modules for the network card are loaded and everything seems fine but I can not establish a connection to other computers in the network/internet. A ping to the the machine itself works, but to other computers fails with 100% loss of packages. I disabled the firewall completely, so this could not be the problem. Could you help, please?

As with quite a few members on this list, try disabling ACPI. When the pc boots and Grub screen appears, type in "acpi=off" and continue booting. Try this first. LW999

As the poster said originally he could connect until he rebooted the machine. It sounds more likely that the default is not set correctly. I would check those settings first. -- Ken Schneider linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998

What exactly did you had in mind with "default is not set correctly"? I use epic100 for this card.
Does ping fail for local subnet connected host or it
just fails for say Internet connection. If it fail for
Internet destinations check your default gateway/route
settings ... netstat -rn

Ping fails for both my local network(100MB/s) and internet. The settings (IP, netmask, gateway) are the correct ones, otherway it couldn't connect first to the internet before the first reboot.

Please post the results of netstat -nr. Usually, the problem is with the routing table. Also, list the IP addresses for both machines and your router. -- Jerry Feldman
