[opensuse] Different resolutions for local LCD and external VGA port
Hi! I have a Dell Latitude 120L, with 14" wide screen LCD, configured for 1280x800x32 on an Intel 915GM (i810 driver). If I connect an external 17" standard LCD to the external VGA port, the monitor says that this mode is not supported. Using SAX, I tried setting up a different resolution (1024x768) for it as it was in multi-monitor mode, but it still doesn't work at all. Any tips? -- % Mauricio Teixeira (netmask) % mteixeira{a}webset{d}net <> Maceio/AL/BR % http://mteixeira.webset.net <> http://pmping.sf.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Mauricio, Tip 1: When you post, please identify which SUSE release you're discussing, e.g. '9.3' or '10.0' or '10.1', etc. Tip 2: please define (make/model/specs) of the external "standard LCD" Tip 3: please explain what you mean by "still doesn't work at all" (think error and log messages as well as describing problematic behaviors.) Tip 4: please try research through Google using phrases like 'SUSE Linux Dell Latitude 120L external display' and so on to see if your situation is already well documented on the web. hth & regards, Carl --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Okie... SUSE 10.1
Tip 2: please define (make/model/specs) of the external "standard LCD"
Any standard LCD, either 17", 14", whatever. Think about an LCD that is capable of 1024x768@60Hz.
Tip 3: please explain what you mean by "still doesn't work at all" (think error and log messages as well as describing problematic behaviors.)
There are no error mesages. It simply loads the screens, I get a signal on the external LCD, but it says "resolution 1280x800 not supported" (again, the error is on the LCD, the system yelds nothing at all).
Tip 4: please try research through Google using phrases like 'SUSE Linux Dell Latitude 120L external display' and so on to see if your situation is already
Serious. Don't you think I've been there already? -- % Mauricio Teixeira (netmask) % mteixeira{a}webset{d}net <> Maceio/AL/BR % http://mteixeira.webset.net <> http://pmping.sf.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks! It really is important to have everyone working 'on the same page' with respect to versions of libraries, configuration files and utilities.

I think you mean a VESA compliant display, which virtually every PC adapter/chipset supports. Have you confirmed the number of colors being transmitted to the display is supported? Could it be the color bit-depth is being set to maximum (32-bit) or 'True Color' (24-bit) but the display only supports 16-bit?

This is a very important clue. It looks to me like the selected horizontal scan and vertical refresh rates and possibly also the color bit-depth are incorrect as configured by SaX2.

How am I to know? My crystal ball is always very foggy! ;-) Besides, I researched some similar phrases and Google returned several dozen 'hits'. Are you saying you found /nothing/ helpful at all? What have you tried? of course it says that. your notebook has a widescreen-display with an aspect-ratio of 16:10 and a resolution of 1280x800. and you try to use that screenmode (1280x800) on the external monitor. but if you don't use an external monitor which also has an aspect-ratio of 16:10 and a resolution of 1280x800 it will reject of displaying that mode. you can do the following: a) use an external widescreen monitor (16:10) b) use the mode 1024x768 on both screens. c) use an external crt monitor (no LCD) d) try to configure your xorg.conf to use different modes on the two displays, but not different content. you should remove or comment out all "xinerama" options in your xorg.conf. -- einen schönen Tag noch DI Rainer Klier Abteilung IT - Entwicklung ECOLOG Logistiksysteme GmbH Bauernstraße 11, A-4600 Wels Tel. ++43/7242/66200 Fax ++43/7242/66200-200 mailto:kra@ecolog.at http://www.ecolog.at --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Interesting doc, but this is not what I had in mind. I would like to have both screens showing the same content, and if I follow the instructions on the link you gave, I would have two different screens. BTW, the external VGA port doesn't have a differend bus or pci id. -- % Mauricio Teixeira (netmask) % mteixeira{a}webset{d}net <> Maceio/AL/BR % http://mteixeira.webset.net <> http://pmping.sf.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
