Firefox 91 - "Web Content" Higher CPU Demand - Any Way To Minimize?
All, One thing I've noticed with FF 91 compared to FF 78 on 15.0 is FF 91 is quite a bit heavier on the CPU that 78. top shows the culprit to be "Web Content". This is with the exact same pages open. I first noticed this by the fan level on my laptop. Checking, rather an an intermittent "Web Content" process waking up and doing whatever it does, it now runs a majority of the time. Not continually, but close. In the past, Xorg was the leader (as expected) running at 0.997% CPU. (that's damn good). But now "Web Content" is continually up with Xorg demanding 0.997% (or 0.664% at times). The end result is a slightly higher CPU demand at idle than with 15.0. This is down on the fine-tuned end of things. I generally tune my setup until the laptop fans are silent at idle. Goal is a "load average:" at idle in top of 0.01 0.01 0.01 or less. Currently it is 0.03 or 0.02 and the difference is "Web Content". Below is the top output (it's a bit higher because I'm editing this in Tbird at the moment), but the rest is representative. Web Content is more active than normal in this slice: top - 13:01:31 up 3 days, 19:28, 2 users, load average: 0.01, 0.06, 0.08 Tasks: 230 total, 1 running, 227 sleeping, 0 stopped, 2 zombie %Cpu0 : 0.5/0.5 1[ ] %Cpu1 : 1.0/0.5 1[| ] %Cpu2 : 0.5/0.5 1[ ] %Cpu3 : 1.0/0.5 1[| ] MiB Mem : 7890.094 total, 377.703 free, 2515.207 used, 4997.184 buff/cache MiB Swap: 2057.996 total, 2056.246 free, 1.750 used. 5025.125 avail Mem PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 26125 david 20 0 3667.9m 615.8m 195.5m S 1.493 7.804 1:06.31 thunderbird-bin 26752 david 20 0 36.3m 4.3m 3.4m R 0.995 0.055 0:00.04 top 2236 david 20 0 13.4m 3.2m 2.2m S 0.498 0.040 1:38.60 gam_server 7303 david 20 0 5514.3m 1.047g 315.3m S 0.498 13.58 31:00.42 firefox 7370 david 20 0 3045.8m 294.5m 167.2m S 0.498 3.733 18:06.73 Web Content 7475 david 20 0 2559.2m 141.1m 95.8m S 0.498 1.788 1:05.96 Web Content 1 root 20 0 219.3m 14.2m 8.8m S 0.000 0.180 0:03.52 systemd 2 root 20 0 0.0m 0.0m 0.0m S 0.000 0.000 0:00.07 kthreadd Rest of the processes are all 0.00 in %CPU and %MEM. Also, what is gam_server? (I think it is also related to FF) Don't recall that being in the top-5 either (though it isn't much). Any ideas how I can tweak Web Content in FF91 to make it behave a bit better? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
