9.3 arrived yesterday, and outside of not syncing with my Palm, there's no show stoppers......yet. However, it's obvious that there's still a LOT of work to be done with laptops and wireless!! I am in hopes someone can help me with this, as it's URGENT. The unit is a Gateway 2.8Ghz with 80GB drive......nice unit that's been running XP Home Edition. 9.3 IS noticeably FASTER by the way. It has a Broadcom BCM4306 80211 b/g wireless chipset and Rioworks BCM4401 100 Bast-T ethernet. Even though 9.3 CAN see the wireless, I CAN'T auto detect, and of course, there's no selection on the short list for that chipset. The ethernet setup looks good, but I can't get DNS. I had thought if I could get that working, just maybe an update would help get wireless working. Does anyone have any assistance with this........VERY, VERY, VERY important to get wireless working! It COULD lead to a LOT of SUSE installs and business!! Thanks!! Fred -- The only bug free software from MickySoft is still shrink-wrapped in their warehouse..."

You may need to use ndiswrapper, works quite well and is easy to setup. docs are under /usr/share/doc/packages/ndiswrapper. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Just because it is in the hardware list does not mean a driver is loaded (may not even be available). I have a laptop with a modem that is detected but there is no driver for it.

I answered a question....."how" did I know SUSE knew about the hardware. Simply answer is that it CAN see it. My complaint is that , so far, there's no driver for it and there SHOULD BE! Fred -- The only bug free software from MickySoft is still shrink-wrapped in their warehouse..."

Try ndiswrapper, as was mentioned, before you give up. I know from first hand experience, if you have a card it supports, it's a very easy and smooth install, and so far it works flawlessly

You have the source code for the Kernel, either make your own driver, or ask the hardware man to make one for Linux. Either way, quit blaming SUSE for something they have no control over.

Mayhaps someone over extended their belief in the distro without anything to back it up? That wouldn't be SUSE's fault either. What were you thinking?

Contrast your experience with mine.... (on 9.2) I had never done a wireless connection in my life but I took my IBM X30 laptop over to a friend's house to show him linux. While we were playing with it, I brought up firefox and was amazed that I was connected through his wireless router.... with NO SETUP WHATEVER. I am still amazed at that.

Yea, because your half wit hardware vendor MADE DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS right? Why don't you send them an email? Just copy and paste your whining from here on the list, and send it to them letting them know how you just blamed an OS for not having proprietery drivers for one of their cards. If SUSE gave you drivers for that damned card they risk legal troubles. This is kind of like you shooting yourself in the leg with an arrow and b laming the bow because you can't aim. Hell, with your way of thinking, my pencil is the reason I mispell something and my fork is the reason I'm big. Heh, still kind of laughing about this. Your vendor makes drivers for Windows and not for Linux and somehow in your head you have it worked out that it's Novell's fault your vendor sucks.

Yeah. SuSE's probably done for now, without your support. You shouldn't have bragged without investigating whether the hardware you wanted to use would be supported, or at least would work.
