With previous versions of SuSE the ftp server was operating by default. Now it seems that with SuSE 8 there isn't a running ftp server. I know from previous discussions that rc.config was moved to sysconfig but I don't know what to change now so that the ftp server will be started when SuSE starts. Can anyone help me? Damon Register

Edit /etc/inetd.conf and uncomment the line that is relevant for the ftp server you're using, save and run insserv inetd. If you're running an ftp server standalone (i.e. not started from inetd) the answer depends on what server you're using. For instance proftpd has a keyword "standalone" that you need to set in its config file. regards Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'
A friend of mine received the following message after setting up an ftp server at SuSE 8.0 (and logging in into the machine): "421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection." After some investigation I suspect that this is caused by too restrictive permissions of the home directory, is that possible? Op woensdag 19 juni 2002 14:21, schreef Anders Johansson:

If you log in and get the home directory you're probably logging in as that user, so I doubt it's a permissions problem. My guess would be that it's a firewall thing. Running passive ftp while the server isn't allowing connections on high ports can cause strange errors. //Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

You can also use YaST (Network/Basic -> Start/Stop services (inetd) -> On with custom ...). -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
