Any connection can be faulty. All this stuff about "directly connected" is a bunch of distinctions without differences.

There is a big difference: the USB storage "thing" does not support the entire xATA/SCSI command set. There is a translation in between, and it is incomplete, some things fail, like SMART (blame the chipset manufacturers). - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
