On the boot selection screen from the DVD I disabled "ACPI" and used "Safe Settings". BINGO! It worked perfectly. I had a completely graphical install. I had used the "Safe Settings" on another try and it didn't work so I have to ask:
What is ACPI and why did disabling it work???????????
Google can find you the answer to what. Why is because ACPI was young and inexperienced when the BIOS for your old puter was written. Need to disable ACPI to install is common in puters of yours' vintage. That's why the initial menu makes the option easy to find and use for those who don't find and read installation instructions. Possibly a motherboard BIOS update is available that would have obviated its need today, and might in future installs.
The OS is working fine now that it's installed.
Right now it's doing a truck load of updates. I'll give the editing Grub configuration after all else is done. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation)

At Billie: Fascinating.....and disappointing. I did not receive the above message of yours in opensuse-help. Did the mail server have a glitch at that time? But to compensate for this, I am absolutely thrilled that you were able to get it "off the ground" :-) .
