The reasons are not clear to me, but /usr/local/bin is not included in root's path if you do su. Do su - instead, and /usr/loca/bin will be in root's path. -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za

Try su - instead of just su. What does "cat $PATH" tell you? -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

Surely you mean to ask what is output by "echo $PATH", right?
correct. (Though I ran cat $PATH and it worked kinda, echo is correct). Thanks for the correction. :-[ -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

Or, you could try KMenu->System->More Programs->File Manager - Super User Mode. If you don't mind getting GUI, that is. On Wednesday 20 October 2004 9:16 am, eddie wrote:

As you may guessed, I want to run a file-browser with root privilege when being in non-root mode.
I don't think you need to su - at all to do this. On my SuSE 9.1 pro installation there is a link in the KDE menu to give you a file browser as root. Look in "K Menu > System > File Manager" Hopefully there will be a link to "File Manager - Super User Mode" It is also possible to set any application to run as another user by altering the properties on its link. Hope this helps Paul
