[opensuse] kde4 - round 9 with kde 4.5.3-1
I had it on the ropes several times in rounds 5 and 7, but it kept coming back for more... First I gave it a right-hook and installed my favorite quicklaunch widget in the task bar. I configured it to use 2 rows like I always have, and it went to its knees. It went *so low*, you couldn't even see the bottom row of icons in the quick launch .. and when you put your mouse over it, the damn tooltip drops down from the top of the screen?? WTF? The kicker bar is wrapping off the bottom of the display around to the top? Yep, it happens, take a look: [217k] http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/kde4/quicklaunch-wrap.jpg I tried resizing the taskbar and it didn't help. It just added frustration as I tried to set my taskbar to 36 px high only to find out the best I could do is guess because nowhere is the pixel height available anymore. It was there in the 4.2-4.3 time frame because I used it. I thought it was kind of wonky not to have a spinner button so you could actually set it without 5 minutes of trial and error moving the mouse up and down, but it was there. No more... Next, I tried the screen shot above, and the damn dialog kept forcing a .jpeg extension even though I typed .jpg. A year ago this was bugged, argued about and fixed, and now kde4 is trying to force the creation of .jpeg files again? That would be fine in I already had .jpeg files, but every .jpg I have is a .jpg file not a .jpeg file. So is this a regression or did somebody change their mind and decide to impose .jpeg extensions on all of us? The in the 7th round, I thew a couple of jabs by opening up a lot of the control panel dialogs. Again kde4 went to its knees. 90% of the configuration dialogs *do not* fit in the default window kde4 draws for the dialog and you end up having to stretch the dialog to be able to see the rest of the content in just about every case. Is dialog window size nothing more than a crap-shoot, or aren't they supposed to fit the content? On the plus side, I was able to use the manage printers to configure a network printer quite satisfactorily. The "manage printer" dialog however, is definitely one of those "after-thought" designs. You have 1 single row of printer icons streaming down the page with 2 inches of wasted space on each side. I had to stretch the dialoag and scroll to see the last printer (I only have 4). But a success nonetheless with postscript drivers and the laserjet 4100n playing nicely together. Then in the first part of round 8, I started basket and told it to use my existing basket source in the .kde directory. Basket said it succeeded in changing the location and would restart to display the new content. So I gave a quick jab to the confirm "OK" button -- It went down and I never saw it again -- KO. So then I wanted to add the show desktop widget to my taskbar. It doesn't work with auto-hide turned on. What? You can't add an applet to the panel with auto-hide enabled? Nope. I'd drag, kicker would flash, but the widget would never find a home. Another unnecessary reconfiguration just to add a widget. You would think that will all those flashy scrolling ribbons and dollar sized icons flying around the bottom of the page that you could just drag it to the kicker and kicker would un-hide and accept the new tool... but alas... no. But kmenuedit was a bright spot. Not one stumble or crash as I added 10-15 additional subfolders and sorted 50 or so icons into their logical place. So kde4.5.3-1 and I are both licking our wounds after the latest round. I just hope it is up for the next go-round. This fight was kind of disappointing. It wasn't even a fair fight. I didn't even kick konqueror around. While I was in kmenuedit, I just created a new konqueror entry to: '/opt/kde3/bin/konqueror --profile filemanagement' problem solved... -- David C.
