IP address for a Palm to use JPilot?

Hi, JPilot users, I got surprised to find out that, in order to use JPilot, I need to setup PPP for serial in the kernel config, and then set up an IP address for the Palm. That is strange. Does it mean that the host Linux box become a router (gateway) and do I need to setup an internal network? Or do I have to go to the office of computer administrator of this building to obtain an authorized IP address to be assigned an extra permanent IP for my Palm Pilot? That is not clearly described in the web page of JPilot, and I hate such a document which misses such an obvious FAQ. Thanks. Regards, G. Hugh Song

Erm - I didn't have to do anything like this when I set it up. Just installed the rpm and ran it. When configuring the palm device, you will have to set up /dev/pilot to point to the serial or USB port to which you have your palm device connected, but I don't think setting IP addresses is essential unless you want to do some clever things with the palm device. No. You do not need an IP address for a Palm or PPP. using Jpilot and
pilot-link you can sync directly via a serial or USB port. Look at the
recent posts on syncing. You also might want to subscribe to the jpilot
users list.
