[opensuse] Huge mess with bootloader(s) - need help
Hi, based on what I see (in 10.3) it seems that opensuse's bootloader isn't a plain grub and doesn't use /boot/grub/menu.lst: if I modify entries in menu.lst I don't see the changes in the menu. How can I eradicate the package that shows suse's green menu and use exclusively grub? Or, alternatively, what files do I need to edit to configure the entries in the green menu? Finally, why so much mess? Wasn't it simpler just using grub? confusion ... confusion ... confusion ... It's the only thing that I really hate in a distribution that overall I like a lot. Thanks, Nico -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I modified menu.lst and it does effect. 2008/5/14 Nico Sabbi <Nicola.Sabbi@poste.it>:

my guess is you don't change the good menu.lst file use yast an look at the real grub place... as you did setup at install time jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

We use the normal grub. If your changes have no effect, you edited the wrong menu.lst. Steffen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

if it's the normal grub then why pressing 'e' on a boot entry doesn't permit me to edit the settings? Every key I press except the arrows and <enter> ends up in the "boot options" line at the bottom (as in the image attached)

Try pressing escape and answering 'OK' to switch to text mode. Then you can edit the options. Cheers Pete -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

thanks, it works :) , but this means that it's not a "plain grub". Is it a patched grub or a package that I can remove and overwrite with good-old-plain-grub? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

if you need it, you should know dowload it from grub web site and compile it... however I always have seen grub work this way. jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sure. Or simply disable the graphics in menu.lst. Steffen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The one main difference is the graphic boot screen. If you don't like that, simply disable it in menu.lst. In All other aspects it's a plain grub. Philipp -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

why is it installing the stages to /dev/sda6 instead of the /dev/sda3 that I specified??
You might find these links useful. The 1st one may be the most useful. The 2nd one will fill in the gaps if needed once you have the basics. http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/grub/index.htm http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p15.htm This way you will be using grub. Looks to be the only way I will sort my mess out too. John -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Steffen Or he edited grub as a user and when you save it nothing is changed. He must edit it as root or su.
