Testing hard drives
Are there any tools that can make a system go through some diagnostic testing procedure to test hard drives? Thanks, -- Tony Zafiropoulos FixMyVirus.com Cel: 314-504-3974 tonyz@fixmyvirus.com Best way to reduce your virus exposure? Run Linux - Replace Windows one system at a time.
What kind of testing? bad block testing or performance??? - Herman On Thu, 11 Jul 2002, Tony Zafiropoulos wrote: ->Are there any tools that can make a system go through some diagnostic ->testing procedure to test hard drives? -> ->Thanks, -> ->

Performance and general burn-in... I set up a software RAID and want to make sure it is ok before making it a production system... There are a number of tools for looking at disk performance and will provide a basic sort of "burn-in" for you. Look at Bonnie++ and IOzone. The original bonnie is ok, but is limited to 2 GB file sizes, although you can create multiple files. Make sure that you run file operations that are at least twice (four time is recommended) the amount of physical RAM you have, to make sure you go past the "buffer cache" (otherwise you'll only be testing your memory.) - Herman On Thu, 11 Jul 2002, Tony Zafiropoulos wrote: ->On Thu, 11 Jul 2002, Herman L. I would be interested in this too. I would require something like drive scan in windows which can check the drive for errors and possibly warn of a possible demise of the drive..... Leo Herman L. Knief wrote:

IBM has a drive fitness test . I don't know if it will run on other brands. http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/dft-linux-readme.htm -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

There's a sad story here. By far the finest tool I know of for disk testing and cleansing is Steve Gibson's SpinRite, but it only works on Windows partitions. Steve has been very outspoken about the security flaws in Windows, so he has no love for it. I find it hard to believe that SpinRite, given its low-level nature, couldn't work on partitions of any type or (even better) on an entire drive. I wish he could be persuaded to release a version that would also work on Linux partitions (or SCO, or what-have-you). Paul
