Re: [SLE] MESA, 3dfx cards and Quake III Arena

Running the Glutdemos and most do not run at all especially Rollercoaster and Skyfly:
Rollercoaster doesn't seem to want to run in fullscreen mode, but Skyfly does. Are you getting fullscreen mode? If not, that means that you probably don't have 'MESA_GLX_FX=fullscreen' set properly.
Running Xracer and tux_agfh, which just sit there and do nothing;
Both of these work well and in fullscreen mode for me, keep on trying.
Some questions related to your remarks above :
The SuSE database says you should install glide_V3 for the Voodoo 3 but you suggest glide_V2, do you have the same card as me ?
I (and you should) use glide_v3; the v2 reference was for the original person who had a Voodoo2 card, so I included, for their sake, just the relevant files.
How exactly do I put the export MESA stuff in .bashrc or .initrc ? I've been entering it at login in level2 or using a console to enter it when I've used KPM
Use your favorite text editor and while in your home directory type (for example) pico .xinitrc. I entered the following line just before the line that reads "export $WINDOWMANAGER": export MESA_GLX_FX=fullscreen You'll have to restart X to get it to kick in. Typing that line in in an Xterm just before starting up whatever program you use should also do the trick.
What is the libMESA option you refer to and what is thedemo setup screen to which you refer ? When should it appear ?
Sorry, it's not called libMESA (I was doing this from memory). Assuming you're using the Q3demo (the retail version might be different), as root type in ./linuxq3ademo-1.11-6.x86.gz.sh . This should eventually bring up a graphical installation screen, choose these options:Demo Base Install and 3dfx Voodoo Mesa GL Library. If you want the other stuff you can do that too.
Sorry for all the questions but I've studied all the posts on this and read as many docs as I can find and I still seem to have done something wrong. It is most frustrating.
Oh yes, I know the frustration very well, keep asking these questions until you get it working. The Voodoo3 is a nice video card and works well in Linux and there should be no reason that you can't get working for you also. There is a bug that affects some users of Q3 that requires the user to be logged in as root to get it to run properly. I couldn't find a line that said "export $WINDOWMAKER" so I put it in front of one that says "exec SWINDOWMAKER" That gives me full screen mode and also gives me the 3DFX splashscreen when I start any of the 3d stuff. Unfortunately they all then jump into a screen full of diagonal lines and hang there. I've tried changing the screen resolution up and down but none makes any differnce. I've also cold rebooted several times. I've also noticed that SAX always auto-detects the card's memory at too low a value and I have to reset it using expert mode. Other than those thoughts I can't think what to do next, any ideas ? Mike

Yep, exec - yet another hurried mistake on my part.

I've had that screen problem sometimes when exiting a program and have had to switch to a console and kill the xserver. However I don't think I know what to do. I have noticed that xf86config does a slightly better job of configuring my xserver than does SaX (SaX uses the wrong modelines for my monitor), though I don't think that's the problem. I'm stumped, you might try reposting this to see if you can get anyone else to join in, or go to the Mesa website and see if they have any suggestions. Sorry I can't do any more. Keep me posted. I personally haven't seen an option to get rollercoaster to run in full-screen. Skyfly, OTOH, runs beautifully on my Banshee. I have the MESA_GLX_FX variable exported in my ~/.xinitrc as well. Don't forget to `chmod 666 /dev/3dfx'. Other misc. notes: Make sure that mesasoft is not installed. Mesasoft directly conflicts with mesa3dfx, and will slow you down. Any time you start a full-screen demo or screen saver, you should see the twirling 3Dfx logo. glide_v3 is the glide package you need, but don't forget glide_sdk.
Running Xracer and tux_agfh, which just sit there and do nothing;

When you configure the X server with SaX, set a normal mode (say, 1024x768) in 16-bit color in the Desktop tab. 16-bit is the Banshee/V3's native mode, so anything else is a waste of time. While you're in Desktop, click on the Expert button, and set an alternate resolution of 640x480 (also 16-bit). This should allow your default resolution to come up on startup, and it will automatically go to 640x480 when you start things like Xracer and Tux:AQFH. I love it; my two favorite games. A racing game (poor polygons, but it's young yet ;), and a game with a 3D penguin! :] -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

That's it !! The games now work. Thank you Jon and also David Bellows for his earlier answers. It's getting a problem like this solved that keeps me using SuSE and this list. Thanks again. Hehehe. Glad to be of service :). I only learned how to do that trick with SaX about a week ago myself... -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
