[SuSE Linux] Neighborwood Watch
Hello everyone:=) I finally got most of the network bugs straightened out as far as the connection goes between my Linux box and my Win95 box:-) Went thru a little bit of panic when I got named running on my linux box and suddenly lost everything on my win95 box (including problems picking up mail locally on my linux box). Found the problem there, (Discovered that 'PTR' doesn't really work to well in my 'SOA' record, 'A' did a better job, also in yast, I had the wrong address set up for eth0 (misunderstanding there I think)). BTW, part of the thing also was that named caused a lot of bounced messages back to me due to undeliverable, but that doesn't appear to be happening anymore:-) BTW, as far as named goes, its set up as a caching only (I think, though win95 appears to send queries on a regular basis even though I have not configured win95 to access a nameserver). Did have just a tad of a problem making my local machines look for a 'local' nameserver, but that was solved simply by rearranging the search list so that the local nameserver appeared first. Now that we have the background in place:-) My problem now is, yes I can 'find' my linux box via the find command in win95 and from there I can see what services are available, but whenever I go to the network neighborhood, it is not listed there. I can still map drives and printers and whatever other service that I have configured as available in samba, but if I don't remember the name, then I have to use the find option in win95 to find the computer and then go from there. I do have Samba set up with the same Workgroup name that my win95 box looks for and it doesn't appear to do anything at all. I would appreciate any ideas that can get my 'office' in the neighborhood watch:-) Thanx Loads! -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Linux User 78912 (Win95 Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Interesting... ;-) Im not sure if this will help but... in 95 try shutting down and logging in as another user, then log on as "root" and issue the password from root that you use on the linux box (that has smb) also did you modify the lmhosts.? on the 95 box I think you may need an entry there for the linux machine but try the loggin in on 95 as root with the root pw. hth rob Bookmarks <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Just as a win95 sidenote; there is a bug in the win95 implementation (big surprize). If you have enabled DNS resolution, win95 will not parse the lmhosts file (neat, eh?). If you go the lmhosts route, you will need to preload the netbios name into the netbios cache with the #PRE tag in the file. The lmhosts.sam explains the tag's use. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

It doesn't matter who I log in as, the results are still the same. It's just kind of strange because I can access everything on my linux box that has been defined in samba, just can't get to it via neighborhood watch, but I can "find" the computer, list its shares and map a drive to any one of them according to the access levels defined.

Yes, the lmhosts file on the win95 box does list all of the current hosts on the network and their ip numbers. I've even set up win95 to look for a wins server (which samba is supposed to be able to masquerade as) and I'm now in the process of locating all the password and "user" files and copying them over to the "profiles" share on the linux box, still haven't been able to make the connection tho:-( Thanx Loads -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Linux User 78912 (Win95 Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

Have you configured Samba to provide WINS service, and set up your win95 clients to reference it as such? I experienced what you described, and WINS curred the problem. You can also list your Linux boxen in the hosts or lmhosts files on the win95 clients, but using WINS cut down on the netbios broadcasting traffic better. Using either method should cause your Linux server to show up in the network neighborhood. Note that windows is broken. It will not parse the lmhosts file if you are using DNS. That is why I said you could list your Linux box in the win95 hosts file. Even though the hosts file is for ip name resolution it will also work for netbios name resolution if you use the lmhosts syntax. Are you sure you are running win95 , and not win 98 , with win 98 you need to set the registry to use non encypeted passwords. there is a doc on the suse sight that outlines this. Aslo check you workgroup and other namimg conventions , Linux is case sensative , ie WORKGROUP and workgroup are diffrent., also check your samba settings. have you created user accts for each of your windows useres , and are you logining in in windows ? Have you set up yout ip services in windows correctly ?? ie ip address.Samba runs its stuff ontop of ip ( I think) Just ssome ideas , I am new to this two . Took me a week to finaly get it all set.
