I'm resending this Question as it gor caught up amongst the 'Mail-loops' I am using SuSE Linux 5.3 on a pentium 75 (Pentium F0 0F bug workaround enabled) and 16 Megabytes of Ram (Toshiba Libretto 50CT Laptop)... I recently compiled a new Kernel to include sound support... with dmesg I can see the Sound initialisation suceeded or something like that. The problem I'm getting is when I do something like cat ping.wav
/dev/audio
a sound is generated but it seems to be part of some 'White noise' any hints, tips, experiences, Drinking songs... You can't cat a wav file do /dev/audio, try an au file, that should work. /dev/audio a sound is generated but it seems to be part of some 'White noise' Wav files sound like crap playing them that way. Try playing au files that way and it'll sound much better. If you want to test waves use something that supports that format better like esd etc. Try playing sound through sound apps, like playmidi, timidity, mpg123 etc, and if you still get the white noise then be concerned.:-) That cat /dev/audio works best with .au files. -M
