I have two computers using a 4-way kvm switch to share a monitor and a usb keyboard and mouse. One machine was upgraded to 9.1 the other is still 9.0. The problem is that if I set the switch to an empty channel (no signal to the monitor then) for longer than about eight hours overnight) and then go back to the channel the 9.1 is on I get no keyboard or mouse response. Sometimes I hear the two system beeps when the usb is initiated sometimes not. I plugged in another usb keyboard directly into the 9.1 machine-no response. So far the only way around this is to hit the reset button. Any ideas on what is happening here? Thanks, Jerome

ssh into the machine while it is in this zombie state and see if the usb drivers unloaded for some reason. You could tail or grep your log via ssh looking for messages that contain usb etc. Make sure its not a screen saver issue or a powermanagement issue (some hardware does not like going to suspend state). This could also be pm settings in bios - having nothing to do with linux, but presumeably this did not happen before 9.1. Also make sure it is the KVM that is the problem by leaving it switched to the 9.1 overnight (or better yet, directly plugged in without the kvm). -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Sounds like the old ps2 issue which was solved by switching to console and back to X. But if its a USB KB it could power down when disconnected and fully discharge. In that case it can not sustain. BTW is the KVM directly connected to the USB KB or is the KB converted to ps2? CWSIV

Yes, the KVM is directly connected to the USB KB. So are you saying the usb mouse and keyboard lose energy over time if not powered by the KVM switch? Thanks, Jerome

Thats what I was told. If its a breif switching then the system just looses synchronysm and the switching to console and back to x forces the hardware to be recognized. Jerome, This no name KVM retains power to devices less than 8 hours which indicates capacitors discharging. We are left then with googling on the exact model kvm (if there are any distinctive marks) and the devices attached to it. what is the make and model of the KB? have you tested it on another machine? No changes of hardware. The problem only showed up when I updated to 9.1.
One thing left power save function either in the KVM or software. Check the 9.1 books for shutting off power save. Myself I just power off the monitor as the big hog and leave the system up. I am not sure if its ACPI or ACP as a search term. As I remember with laptops this is a bugger of a problem. Cant say I ever heard it making desktops crazy. I suppose next we will have USB controlled TippLite surge protectors which allow us to use the KB to turn off the monitor and whatever else.
