[opensuse] 11.2 with KDE3
Hello: Is it possible to install openSUSE 11.2 with KDE3 instead of KDE4? I mean I do not want to install any KDE4 packages, only KDE3. Is KDE3 in the official distro at all? I looked through package list at http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/oss/suse/i586/ but can see very few kdebase3 packages. Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello Istvan NO, you can not install 11.2 whitout any KDE4 Packages. 11.2 is the first Distribution from openSUSE which comes whitout KDE3, and KDE3 is also not supportet any longer by openSUSE. This means, that you can use the 11.1, where both Desktop's where supportet, but even then you will have some kde4 packages on your system, or you can install openSUSE 11.2 with KDE4 and install KDE3 as optional Desktop but whitout any support. If you want openSUSE 11.2 whit KDE4 and (!!) KDE3, you will find KDE3 at... http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.2/ but whitout support.. Thank you for your answer. Then my question if it is possible to install without KDE4 like this: 1. Install the system without any graphical environment. 2. Start yast in cli mode then add the non-official KDE3 repo and install KDE3 from there. In this case are still required KDE4 packages for correct operation? My understanding is that when you install 11.2 as a fresh installation you only get KDE4(31). BUT you can also install KDE3 if you select afterwards the right repositories. I may be wrong in my understanding so don't take it for granted. However, the bottom line is that KDE4(31) is installed when you do a clean install of 11.2. Having stated this, as *I* don't have any special overwhelming needs to have KDE3, I find KDE4 (and I am now running 4.3.3) is more than satisfactory - in fact I find that there is nothing in KDE3 which I miss. Thank you for your answer. Then my question if it is possible to install without KDE4 like this:
just install 11.2 with Gnome only, to do that just check the GNOME Desktop radio button seen in the "Desktop Installation" step following paragraph 6 in this 11.2 Quick Start Manual: http://www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse112/art_osuse_installquick_112/?... then use whatever method you wish to install KDE3 (from 11.1 or 11.2 repos, or via downloading the source and compiling it all yourself..) easy. dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello: What I did was: Installed openSUSE 11.2 as text only server. After this I run yast2 in text mode and set up KDE3 repository and installed KDE3 and xserver. The problem now is how I can activate x/windowmanager. I am starting a new thread related to this question. You maybe haven't yet installed *dm. zypper in kdm will probably do it if startx isn't yet working. Look in /etc/inittab. If the default runlevel is 3 you probably want to change it to 5. And/or, append a 5 to cmdline in your grub's menu.lst primary stanza. -- The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 1 Corinthians 7:3 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. issue as root: init 5 or from a <user> console: startx there is also a /usr/bin/startkde script but I have kde4 and it might not be available for kde3 ?? You would use "startkde" rather than "startx". -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

issue as root: init 5 I always add && exit to logout root.
there is also a /usr/bin/startkde script but I have kde4 and it might not be available for kde3 ?? You would use "startkde" rather than "startx". $USER/.xinitrc would generally have startkde in it so that startx would run KDE as the DE.

Thank you all for suggestions. Practically all of them works: startx, init 5, and changing default runlevel to 5. Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
