[opensuse] Fw: OpenSUSE 12.3 in Hyper-V
I am trying to install OpenSUSE 12.3 in Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2. Every time I try to install I get the following error message in a small dialog box at around 86% – 93% of the installation when the status is ‘installing bootloader’. I have absolutely no idea why OpenSUSE will not install on Hyper-V as Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Debian all install and operate fine. Can anyone please shed some light on this as I have not been able to find any help so far with this issue? -----An error occurred during initrd creation----- Kernel image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.7.10-1.1-desktop Initrd image: /boot/initrd-3.7.10-1.1-desktop Root device: /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-14d53465420202020316d649b43c4c740ab596834b8e2babf-part2 (/dev/sda2) (mounted on / as ext4) Kernel Modules: thermal_sys thermal processor fan hv_vmbus hv_storvsc hv_netvsc ata_piix ata_generic scsi_dh scsi_dh_alua acsi_sh_hp_sw scsi_dh_emc Features: acpi fv_guest block Perl-Bootloader: 2013-03-18 18:44:12 <3> pbl-1547.2 Core::RunCommand.1642: Error: Command 'usr/sbin/grub2-install --target=i386-pc --force --skip-fs-probe "(hd0,2)" > /var/log/YaST2/y2log_bootloader 2>&1' failed with code 256 and output: /usr/sbin/grub2-bios-setup: error: disk 'hd0,2 not found. I /seem/ to recall recently learning that drive numbering starts at "1" and not "0" for grub2, which would be consistent with a "disk 'hd0,2 not found' error. hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Hi Carl, Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Please forgive me as I am very new to this. When the error comes up, it asks me if I wan to retry boot loader configuration. I click yes and it opens up the configuration screen. The options on this screen are set as follows: Boot Loader: GRUB2 Boot Loader Location: Boot from Root Partition Which of these options do I have to change? Do you have any idea why this does not work in Hyper-V but the exact same options work in VirtualBox and on a physical machine? -----Original Message----- From: Carl Hartung Sent: Tuesday, March 26, 2013 7:46 PM To: opensuse@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [opensuse] Fw: OpenSUSE 12.3 in Hyper-V On Tue, 26 Mar 2013 19:31:58 -0000 Paul Groves wrote:

Hi Paul, First, the convention on this list is 'bottom posting.' Second, we already receive mails sent to the list so there's no need to send second copies directly to subscribers. :-) Unfortunately, I don't really have time to walk you through debugging this tonight, but I can at least point you to some good resources: "Invoking terminal from YaST" http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:YaST_tricks#Invoking_terminal_from_YaST "Bug 779534 - /usr/sbin/grub2-install failed with code 256" --> not your specific problem, but closely related and some great context and diagnostic tricks: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=779534 Try "2013 grub2-install failed with code 256" and variants in Google. Good luck & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
