Most (if not all) of the "experts" that will help you on this mailing list do so on a volunteer basis. Their hope is that their efforts will be magnified by multiple people having the same question will see the answer and benefit from it.
I agree with you.
Alternatively, if they are not fully expert, they hope someone else will step in and add value to their answer by supplementing or correcting it.
I agree with you again.
They also know the list is archived in various places. (My favorite search tool since the start of the year is http://opensuse.markmail.org/).
Direct emails for topics that are appropriate for the mailing list are therefore frowned upon unless there is a reason to keep it off the mailing list. Your question was not sensitive in anyway, so the recipients feel put upon that you would directly email them.
Frankly speaking Greg, I am new to Linux, I mailed not to one or two but in fact to some seven people who mailed in the lists (after reading their mails here which were found to be very good). I was to contact even more people but before that this mail came for which I thank because now the picture is clear that small (and may be **silly**) queries can be asked here....Yes some questions are quite easy which I was afraid to ask here....But now, I guess you are true that many people can comment in a commonplace and can let know the issue(s) in a much better way and that's why the mailing lists are for....!! Further I would like to share, most of the responses say that openSUSE is really better distribution to be used when compared with the counterpart distributions. I came to know that Linux is after all Linux, but as a newbie I am happy to use openSUSE now. -- Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity. --- Charles Mingus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
