When I start libreoffice, a main window opens: start center (?). From the left side one can open files and start specific libreoffice programs (writer, calc, impress etc.). I don't know but as a workaround you can always start a specific application. e.g. if you start lowriter it displays a blank document when it starts, or localc displays a blank spreadsheet. If you want detailed advice about LO you will generally find it on the LO list.
