Hi all... Looking at tty10 where the error messages are I see this: ide : failed opcode was : unknown hda : drive not ready for command ide0 : reset: success hda : irq timeout: status = 0x80 { Busy } Should I worry about this? Is my brand new 80gb disk going bad? A few minutes after I wrote the above I had the system freeze up on me and I had to do a hard reboot. I noticed that this happened just after I had loaded some pictures from my digital cameria disk using a USB card reader. After I loaded the pictures I tried to burn them to a CD. K3B gave me an error and kicked the cd out. I tried to reboot and everything locked up. I unplugged the USB card reader and did a hard boot. Now it seems to work fine and I don't get any errors. Could the USB system be a problem? A couple of hours later, it seems that I still have this problem at odd times even without the card reader. So far I've not had to reboot, but a couple of times I've got the errors above and the system slowed down, even stopped for a couple of seconds once. What do you guys think? Do you also get messages about lost interrupts? I get similar sorts of errors, including dma_timer_expiry, channel reset, and lost interrupt on my realtively new drives. Normal testing of the drives suggests they are OK. I've done a lot of Googling and found lots of similar complaints, but no clear solution. I have come to the conclusion that it's probably a kernel/driver issue, though it's not clear if anyone is fixing/has fixed it. - Richard. -- Richard Kimber http://www.psr.keele.ac.uk/

Not yet! <G> After I sent this email I had the disk crash again. When I did a hard boot the first time the bios did not find the disk. Then on the third reboot the bios got the disk but Linux was getting this error: Unable to read inode block With allot of different numbers. I'm really thinking about taking this disk back. I don't need these PIA from bad hard ware. I may just get my money back and use my old 6gb disk. I don't really need an 80gb HD, I just got greedy.<G> I even think that it would make my wife happy. Sounds to me like it could the same as I had recently: too many discs/devices and to weak a power supply ... Martin

I'll second that. How many and what types of devices and peripherals does this system support? What wattage is the power supply and how old is it? Have a voltmeter handy? If your +/-12V and +/-5V are off by 10% or more (10.8V or less or 4.5V or less) your power supply is bad or overloaded. Does your BIOS have hardware temp and volt reporting so you could see what it has before loading the OS? Did you get all the dust out and off heatsinks, fans, power supply intakes and exhausts? Be very careful with static electricity discharges - be well grounded! Stan

Use S.M.A.R.T. (smartmontools) - it's easy and it pays off. Manufacturers accept SMART-errors as reason for RMA. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.de/freetrial - jetzt für 30 Tage ausprobieren - kostenlos und unverbindlich!

Try : smartctl --log=error /dev/hda |less It will dump the last 5 errors. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
Hi al... I'm back!! I've been off-line for the past 48 hours (more or less) rebuilding my system. I'm now running an old PI 233 that I had in the attic. Anyway my hard disk was fine, it was the MoBo that went bad! I moved the hd to this old system and it now works fine, but slow. So, now I'm in the market for an "new" used mobo. I'll start a new thread about that. Thanks to all for the help! Too bad your in germainy. You might consider www.pricegrabber.com most of the sites are American but likely you can research motherboards and comments there. One point avoid ASUS as the new ones are nothing but trouble based on this lists comments. You dont need the latest MB either. I bought this PII 350 as a bare bones setup put in my own memory, graphics, sound, CD and HD no problems. You don't even need a fast graphics card this one is only 8mb. -- _______ _______ _______ __ / ____\ \ / / ____|_ _\ \ / / | | \ \ /\ / / (___ | | \ \ / / | | \ \/ \/ / \___ \ | | \ \/ / | |____ \ /\ / ____) |_| |_ \ / \_____| \/ \/ |_____/|_____| \/
