[opensuse] A few question on customizing KDE4
Hello: I have installed openSUSE 13.1 on a new computer and I decided to give a try to KDE4. The overall experience so far is good but I still have a few question on some customization setting. Some of them KDE4 specific, other are not. -- In KDE4 how can I change the panel background and font color. By googling I found that I have to chose change the theme, but I have find the theme I like and I already have customized its colors etc properties. I only couldn't find how I can customize panel colors. -- In KDE4 how can turn off all notification sounds by one or two clicks. I found notification sound settings in Configure desktop -> Common appearance and behavior -> Application and system notifications -> Application tab -> Event source pulldown. But here I should go through all the pulldow options and within each of them untick the play a sound icon several times. There must be some more powerful method without requiring turning the sound off one by one (as there was a turn all sound off button in KDE3). -- In Krusader viewer or editor (F3/F4) how can I disable coloring of text? -- When I insert a DVD in the DVD drive and copy files from it, it spins too fast and make too much noise (resonating). How can I decrease the reading speed? -- How can I disable the updater notification? I disabled it in the system tray still after login a notification window popped in on the screen. -- Is it possible to get back /media folder instead of /var/run/media/<user>? It is too complicated to navigate here (in konsole). Thanks in advance, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

One possibility is to switch it off in the mixer (the speaker icon that appears in the task bar; where you set the volume). Click on the speaker below the slider of "event sounds" (?? - german: "Ereignistöne") and your computer is quiet. -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Barcelona professional photography: http://www.daniel-bauer.com google+: https://plus.google.com/109534388657020287386 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

CLI:systemsettings -> Desktop Theme -> Details That allows you to pull in details from other themes :-) For fonts -> system settings -> fonts -> taskbar which deals with the font & size of the panel (e.g. At bottom of screen)

ls -s /var/run/media/<user> ~/mymedia
This doesn't work, John. It should read "ln -s.........." and not "ls -s....." :-) . And there is one other "catch" :-( . The directory MEDIA does NOT exist but is only created in /var/run/ when one plugs in a memory stick or inserts a CD/DVD. Naturally, the /<user> subdirectory in /var/run/media doesn't exist until a device is plugged in by the <user>. For the symlink to work one must then first manually create the /media/<user> in /var/run . That is, you will be ending up with '/var/run/media/<user> . I used the old faithful mc to do this. (And in keeping with the practice of old when intelligence was not at a premium, I symlinked this to the (main) /media directory and not to ~/mymedia as you suggested.) I think this will do it: Create: /etc/udev/rules.d/99-correct-media-mount-point.rules including: ENV{ID_FS_USAGE}=="filesystem|other|crypto", ENV{UDISKS_FILESYSTEM_SHARED}="1" Or if you prefer: echo 'ENV{ID_FS_USAGE}=="filesystem|other|crypto", ENV{UDISKS_FILESYSTEM_SHARED}="1"' > /etc/udev/rules.d/99-correct-media-mount-point.rules The name of the file doesn't matter much as I recall, but you want it to be last of all the rulles alphabetically in that directory. Or do what John suggested - but including my comments to his suggestion. That is, as root: * in /var/run manually create /media/<user> (using mc [Midnight Commander] to do this is a breeze); and * then on a command line execute 'ln -s /var/run/media/<user> /media ' to create the symlink [##] and from then on you wlll find that the memory stick/CD/DVD you plugin/insert will show up in '/media/<user>'. [##] John suggested using '~/mymedia' as the destination in the symlink but if you want to do this then, again, you would need to manually create /mymedia directory in your /home. However, /media is automatically created when oS is installed. But the choice is yours as to the final destination of the symlink. You can have a logical link, ~/mymedia, pointing to a yet non-existing directory /run/media/<username>. As soon as /run/media/<username> is created by inserting your media it will point to an existing directory. I don't need that when I choose to display the content in Dolphin. -- fr.gr. member openSUSE Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
