[opensuse] [OT?] Hard disk protected by accident, not accesible
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, A friend of mine bought a new HD for his laptop. He says he also intended to install Linux in one of the new partitions - to keep slightly on-topic here ;-) The thing is he was partitioning it, and left the program running (I think it was a windows program called "erase"), with the machine on battery, and he forgot about it. When he came back battery had been exhausted, powered off, and now the thing asks for a Hard Disk Password! We don't know how to disable it. And no, I was not present. I'm not that dumb - I hope! O:-) I have seen some options in hdparm about password - but all require a password we don't know, AFAIK. The HD is empty, there is no problem if the procedure requires erasing everything. It is a Fujitsu MHZ2320BH. I googled for model name and password - only found forums requiring password entry, and some data recovery companies (a new HD would be cheaper, I think). Any ideas? - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.9 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkkopMQACgkQtTMYHG2NR9UIWACfdfqRpm3ijszDxHskUQA1W8qT HrMAn1hjy6DJwGi3xN75SBxrtjHBzmh+ =Tk1D -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, I have been pointed to that one already. Very bad news, then. My firend has &%/&$& Royally. I think he used this feature mentioned in "man hdparm", or similar feature, from a windows program: --security-erase PWD Erase (locked) drive, using password PWD (DANGEROUS). Password is given as an ASCII string and is padded with NULs to reach 32 bytes. The applicable drive password is selected with the --user-master switch. THIS FEATURE IS EXPERIMENTAL AND NOT WELL TESTED. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. --security-erase-enhanced PWD Enhanced erase (locked) drive, using password PWD (DANGEROUS). Password is given as an ASCII string and is padded with NULs to reach 32 bytes. The applicable drive password is selected with the --user-master switch. THIS FEATURE IS EXPERIMENTAL AND NOT WELL TESTED. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. There is a chance the password is blank, we'll try. We don't know how to disable it.
He had used this (opensource): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDDerase http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=148 ] HDDerase.exe is a DOS-based utility that securely erases “sanitizes” ] all data on ATA hard disk drives in Intel architecture computers ] (PCs). It offers the option to run the drive internal secure erase ] command, security erase unit, based on the ATA specification by the ] T13 technical committee. To run the utility make a floppy, recordable ] CD-R, or USB DOS bootable disk; then copy HDDerase.exe to the bootable ] media. Reboot the computer with the floppy, CD-R, or USB inserted, and ] type “hdderase” at the system DOS prompt. Make sure to set the correct ] priority boot order in the system BIOS, such as first boot floppy, ] CD-R, or USB depending on which media is used to run HDDerase.exe. ] HDDerase.exe must be run from an actual DOS environment and not a ] Window based DOS command prompt environment. It appears that if you give the command to erase the disk and the machine is powered off, the disk is secured, encrypted. There is no way to recover any data at all. If you run the program again, it erases everything, then clears the password. That's what he did, and the disk is blank and usable again. Think of espionage: you see the "others" coming, you erase the disk, they get to the pc, power it off... no matter, the disk is secured and they will not be able to access anything. :-O - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
