I have SuSE 6.3 running on an old 486 that is keeping the world running in my home. It's been doing so well for so long that I'm almost afraid to touch it! However, I decided at least to put on the updates from the SuSE website for 6.3. Everything has worked fine except for the apache upgrade. I have downloaded and installed the latest apache and mod_* files. All went on the system without any complaints. I ran SuSEconfig again without problems However, when I restart apache it first complains that it can't find the file rc.reset and then fails when there is no startup.perl file. Not only is there no startup.perl script on my system but the directory it's supposed to be in also doesn't exist. I've gone back to the earlier version of apache and the mod_* files as shipped with 6.3. They work without problems. Any hints??? Gerry "The lyf so short, the craft so long to learne" Chaucer
Sorry to do a me too, but I don't suppose Gerry and I are the only ones - what steps do we need to take to get a working Apache 1.3.17 in 6.3? How do we 'update all installed modules' (security update description on update pages) so as to get a running installation? Please help the modularly challenged ... Thanks folks Fergus On Sunday 25 February 2001 23:24, you wrote:

http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/apachegd_71.html although relate to 7.1 but may help if you have not tried it -- Togan Muftuoglu
Thanks! I checked out the url you gave me but it wasn't for the same problem at all. It is concerned with php. My problem after upgrading on 6.3 is about missing the file rc_reset (several errors) and then the file startup.perl (complained about twice before apache fails). Apache doesn't get far enough to complain about anything else that's missing. Gerry On Mon, 26 Feb 2001, Togan Muftuoglu wrote:

startup.perl should belong to mod_perl, AFAIK. -Kastus

Perhaps that's the problem...that the updated mod_perl doesn't have the correct files for the old SuSE 6.3??? I did install the mod_perl that's in the update directory along with the new apache. In any case, I've tried it multiple times from a clean system (apache and all mod's removed). The end result is always the same. apache fails on startup complaining that rc_access is missing and that it can't find startup.perl (even the directory isn't there).
