A different problem related to USB external drives. I just downloaded the "free" 9.1 yesterday, burned it to a CD, and figured to install it at home. It errored-out on three files but kept on installing, then rebooted. To nothing. I had to restart the machine with an old Windows 95 disk so I could use "fdisk /mbr" to enable the machine to even find Win2K. Note I'd allowed SuSE to do what looked like intelligent partitioning of my installed hard disk and the Maxtor 300LS 40GB attached via USB and formatted for NTFS. When I went back into the system via Partition Magic 8 I got a message that there were formatting errors and that the external disk needed to have its data backed off. There WAS no data. PM8 marked 40 GB of space as "Bad." It could not be accessed nor could it be reformatted. This is not the first time this has happened with a Maxtor disk. I did nothing but follow the SuSE prompts and let it do the thinking. I've also had this experience with Redhat so it's not just one brand of Linux, it seems to be a situation with the external drive doesn't care for something in Ext3 formatting (maybe). Anyone had this experience. I feel like I just threw $140 down the toilet to activate a free product and I am decided annoyed. ken -------------- Original message --------------
Hi Allen,
Your reply is appreciated. Yes it only wants to be fed with a teaspoon. Still would like to know that application that needed re-install. Thanks Johan Sch *********************

Have you tried Mounting it from a Command line to see if any errors pop out? I've had a few problems similar to this before, but that was back in my SUSE 8.1 days. Heh, my first Linux Distro. Anyway, it hasn't happened in a long time, but my USB ZIP drive 100 did do this a few times. I found that making sure you mount and un-mount correctly, and don't give it a huge load all at once, that it works fine.

Hi, Running suse 9.1 - kernel 2.6.3-15mdk.(Mandrake 10.0 alternately). Installed and updated this last weekend. All this on a new pc. Do not know if my problem existed before the update.
When I transfer data to sda1 or 2 then the external drive light comes on and stays on. This hangs my pc too. Nothing works and the only recourse is to press the reset switch.
I remember sometime ago some discussions about hotplug/usb. That some application was to be re-installed from cd. I did not take that much notice of the problem because I did not have a problem.
Kindly please what was suggested to overcome this.
The new hardware may be suspected but works like a charm in Mandrake 10.0. Thanks. -- Johan Sch Registered Linux User #330034 May this be a good day for learning
