I googled this and am having no luck - how can I kill the sound on my system (7.3) between say, 8:00 to 8:30 and turn it back on again? I can't find anything related to sound to stop and start. Command: rcalsasound --help Results: Usage: /usr/sbin/rcalsasound {start|stop|try-restart|restart|force-reload|reload|status} You can use it to make a script that shuts down/restarts at a time, or perhaps cron will help you do this. To shut down: rcalsasound stop and like wise for start. You can reset it via restart and/or try-restart. If it's being cranky the go for reload or force-reload. HTH, Curtis. Now if I can just figure you how to get alsa to stop resetting the rear speakers, the keep going of and the mixers always reset them. It worked for shutting it off but when it starts and shows as running there's no sound. Is there something else that has to be restarted? -- (o< //\ Powered by SuSE Linux V_/_ Virusproof. Crashproof. 9:20pm up 2 days, 8:42, 25 users, load average: 1.77, 1.98, 1.80 processes 282914

Ok, I think I know what might be the problem (if so your gonna laugh). If you in KDE the press alt-F2 and type "kmix" (no qoutes) and then hit the run button. Then check and see what the various levels are set to. On common mishap is that people often over look the obvious (just did this myself this morning after a clean install). The volume in most users accounts (and possible root) is set to 0. Probably so the user can't scream at SuSE if they had their speakers cranked and then got damaged or blown when the kde start .wav file played. So, give it a look see and if it's not then we can look at some log files and other things to see what's what. That's it, never would have thought of that. Haven't had to deal with volume in a year and a half. I'll use aumix in the same script to set the volume.
