[opensuse] 11.0 ......a BIG update gotcha!!
DON'T update the kernel in 11.0 as there's an excellent chance that when Grub tries to startup the system, it won't boot!! This is repeatedly what I get with 11.0 64-bit. Fred -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Fred, This is a known bug and is mentioned hundreds of time already on the Factory Mailinglist, where all comments about 11.0 at the moment belong. Or did I miss that 11.0 is already releasesd? I don't believe this answer...... If it is a known bug and has been mentioned "hundreds of time already on the Factory Mailinglist" then why, in the name of common sense and the Einstein factor, is the kernel sitting in the factory repository and is allowed to be selected by zypper - and smart for that matter - as an upgrade to the original when the darn thing is a piece of useless rubbish?! The kernel is dated 23 May and today is 28 May -- and it's still sitting there (as of a 30 seconds ago). As you put it nicely in your signature: --> Vulgar language is the linguistic crutch of inarticulate persons. Well: in case you did not realize: we're talking about Factory. The solution is as simple as stated on the Factory list for many times already: add acpi=off as a boot parameter. There will most likely come an updated kernel rpm soon.\ Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Same thing I did. Boot with noacpi=off (or in failsafe mode, failing that) and apply the kernel update from factory:HEAD IIRC. I did a search on Google for the error message I got and found the fix that way. Easy. Stop using beta versions. 11.0 is not a supported product yet. You get to report problems and provide fixes and support, not complain about them and demand fixes and support. Thats why people keep saying "this is factory", and "... as mentioned already on the factory mail list ...", etc. Take the hint. If you're using Factory, discuss it and be kept up to date about it on the Factory mail list (not here), and if it's too buggy for you to use, then, don't use it. Use 10.3 or whatever is the latest released version at a given time, then complain and demand fixes if _that_ doesn't work as advertised. As for not reading every post, you never heard of google? Or the search box on the web interface to the archives of all the mail lists? Good grief.... -- Brian K. Ce?

Tried that and other suggestions - as I already mentioned in the this forum - with no effect and had to re-intall 11B3 now at least 3 times in trying out the suggested solutions. Now, since I know that Fred reads this forum why did he have to ask the question about the kernel even though it's been mentioned here 'hundreds of time already"? The answer, of course, is that not everybody religiously reads each and every message not every thread - and especially if the Subject of a thread is not related to the real subject of the thread - as for instance, as seen many times,"Need Help" which conveys absolutely nothing to the reader.
There will most likely come an updated kernel rpm soon.\
Ah, now that would be nice. Can I assume that this will occur tomorrow (29 May, European time) when the RC1 is released? I have no idea when a new kernel will hit Factory. From the commit list I know that several updates are checked in. In case those systems were setup from the Beta 3 LiveCDs, you might be hit by bugs: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=392054 and https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=389177 (marked as dup of the previous one). Both are mentioned in the most annoying bugs of 11.0, beta 3 http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_11.0_dev One point where the problem / solution with acpi=off was discussed was on http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2008-05/msg00477.html And then: still, this discussion belongs on -factory. On 2008/05/28 at 19:43 (GMT+1000), Basil Chupin complained and complained and complained...
So then on 2008/05/28 12:06 (GMT+0200) Dominique Leuenberger apparently typed:
And then: still, this discussion belongs on -factory.
Exactly. BTW, the 23 May 32 bit kernel works fine for me without needing acpi=off, but if you need 64 bit and it doesn't work, go for a KOTD. That's how I got around the problem before the 23 kernel was available. -- ". . . . in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you . . . ." Matthew 7:12 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg.
