You say "mixer" -- do you mean alsamixer?
I don't know, it doesn't say. The applet says "audio mixer", the
says "Volume control".
If not then run alsamixer as user on a command line and see (using F6)
that there is a card available.

Aaah, that pulseaudio ... love it or hate it, it will be there... Don't
forget pulseaudio sits ontop of alsa so do the alsamixer thing.

Oh, when you click on the Speaker (bottom right on taskbar --ie, if you
do have this speaker) is the volume set to more than 0?
All volumes are set above zero.
