[SuSE Linux] suse problems or linux problems
I'm considering getting started with Linux. I wonder if the active suse list with so many user problems is the result of the suse distribution or is the difficulty with Linux itself? I understand that either way I'll have to put in a significant amount of study and work to try something other than the DOS/Windows I'm used to. Thank you. Tap into MS' phone support lines (no, don't really) and see how much traffic they have each day. At least w/Linux you'll get some real help instead of the 'reboot/reinstall' mantra. A lot of the activity on a list like this comes from experienced users helping newbies get over the first few humps of the learning curve of switching to a new OS/way of doing things. They are usually more 'how do i' questions than bug reports.
I understand that either way I'll have to put in a significant amount of study and work to try something other than the DOS/Windows I'm used to.
One of the things I love the most about Linux is that when I do research on an issue I'm having I actually LEARN things. I learn what is happening and why and how to fix it, or at least get very close to each. Each problem I have to deal with or new thing I try makes me better equipped next time I have an issue or someone on a list asks a question. With MS it was always a guessing game in the end, and helping my friends with their Win machines just meant I played the guessing game for them cause I was better at it. -- Jeremy Blosser | jblosser@firinn.org | <A HREF="http://jblosser.firinn.org/"><A HREF="http://jblosser.firinn.org/</A">http://jblosser.firinn.org/</A</A>> -----------------+-------------------------+------------------------------ "Would you fight to the death, for that which you love? You think this list is any more active than the M$ support newsgroups? I seriously doubt it. Most of the posts that I recall (maybe its wishful thinking) are not SuSE specific items..but things that would need to be resolved regardless of distribution. With the exception of one poster a couple of days ago, I've never come across anybody who has used SuSE and not liked it better than other distros. Hey, Welcome to SuSE! SuSE is one of the best linux distributions you can find. Thank God people are posting here because it is your assurance you will get help if you need it. I would be very wary of any distribution that did not have an active list. More directly, some posts result from debatably buggy code, but I bet most post as a result of just trying to figure out a complex subject like Linux.

That's a loaded statement. :-) Some would argue it is more time-consuming to keep win up as a 'server' than a linux system, due to inappropriateness to the job. For me, I 'study' more on linux than I ever did [do] on win, but then it's nice to study something fun, vs. just necessary.

Actually, if you think this list has a lot of issues, you should see the RedHat and Debian lists. Don't be intimidated if it seems overwhelming, it's not that bad. But if you are a beginner you came to the right place to learn. As to your question: "is it the result of the suse dist or Linux itself?" I'd think Linux has a learning curve, and S.u.S.E. has it's own system of doing things that you have to get to know. I think most of the problems are Linux related, not S.u.S.E. related, but that I think if you don't mind learning and taking to time, you'll find that Linux is MOSTLY a fun os to use. You're right you'll probably have to get some literature, just to familiarize yourself with things, but don't be daunted, I don't think it's as difficult as it might appear from the outside.:-) I hear alot of people recommending 'Running Linux' as a good starting book. I'd concur. Perhaps check it out and and read up and see if it's something you want to try. If it is, there are plenty of great people on this list and others that will be happy to assist when and if you have problems. Linux is simply a more complex operating system, but in many respects it is also far more powerful than windows. Linux, an OS that sees a great deal of development occur over the internet will always have active news groups, discussion groups, and web conferences. Don't be put off by an active user base, be encouraged by it :o) Rob

Compare the SuSE list to Red Hat's, and I think you'll find far fewer problems posted on this one than RH's. To answer your question, probably the high learning curve associated with Linux, especially those coming from the hand-holding MS world.
