[oS-EN] I found out a new trick on Thunderbird
Hi, I get a bunch of commercial email that pollutes one of my inboxes, as does everybody. I found a new trick: Create a filter that matches on the From address and "age > 3 days", with an action that can be delete, but I simply move to a folder in the same imap server, so that the mail is still accessible in any of my computers. I'm happy :-) I could also use this age trick to purge/archive the mail list folder, after 90 days. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.5 (Laicolasse))

I just use the built in spam filters on my mail server and Thunderbird. After all these years I don't get spam. Now, if I could just get it off my pone I would be happy. -- In times of Tyranny and injustice when law oppresses the people, the outlaw takes his place in history. ~ · Robin Hood · 2010 · Screen Title

Nonono. This is not about spam, this is not spam. It is just mail that I want out of sight faster than the important mails. I see it, pay attention briefly, done -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.5 (Laicolasse))

In that case, I'm curious why you don't use the "List-ID:" to identify them. It seems to me that would be more stable for legitimate emails than the "From:" address. (And I know you're aware of "List-ID:", because you showed us a procmail recipe on 5-Jul that uses it.) -- Bob Rogers http://www.rgrjr.com/

Well, because it is a different account that I use for purchases, banks, etc. Once I buy something, like a laptop or a phone, they keep sending me adverts for laptops or phones at least once a week. How many do they think I need? I expect a laptop to last 15 years. Well, they do not use mail lists, and I just want the mails gone from sight soonish. So these filters automate this. After a number of days, that allow me to see them, they disappear. And procmail can't be used, they are imap accounts on my ISP, remote. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. When companies send bulk email, as for advertising, they are usually using some kind of mailing list technology. If you look at these messages, you'll find such things as "Unsubscribe:" headers, and that usually includes "List-ID:". If they don't do that, then they get heat for being spammers. So these filters automate this. After a number of days, that allow me to see them, they disappear. I also get bulk advertising emails from companies that I want to see, but don't consider important, so I redirect them to different folders. based on "List-ID:". And the emails they send about such things as product ordering and billing come directly into my inbox, because they are not bulk. And procmail can't be used, they are imap accounts on my ISP, remote. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. But if Thunderbird can filter based on other email headers, I don't see why it shouldn't also be able to handle "List-ID:" headers as well. -- Bob

That's an idea, send any mail in that account with a List-ID to a subfolder.
But if Thunderbird can filter based on other email headers, I don't see why it shouldn't also be able to handle "List-ID:" headers as well.
Well, for example on imap.gmx.es, I can't, the filters based on those that I use on Alpine stopped working, with an error similar to imap server side searches not supported. Meaning, that header is not part of the imap preview. Alpine has to do a full download of the entire imap inbox folder in order to apply the filtering. Same thing for Thunderbird, except that Th caches the entire folder on disk, and only has to download them once, for new messages. However, on Th that header has to be added, it is not listed by default. I may have it now because I added it on the past. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.5 (Laicolasse))

Partially related, I noticed on such an email today, and I saw only one header with "List... something", it was a "List-Unsubscribe:" with a web link. I pasted it on FF, and got "Link is invalid" response. List-Unsubscribe: <https://links.housfy.com/e/eh?_t=....LONGSTRING,<mailto:unsubscribe+number+number@unsubscribe.iterable.com> I might try to mail to that address at the end of the link, or just forget it, and just redirect to another folder (which can be /dev/null). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. OK, so it sounds like it's possibly but requires prior configuration on Thunderbird, but Alpine doesn't let you test those headers. ================ From: "Carlos E. Hi,
<snip> nice trick,
But... Why are all your e-mails prefixed with "[oS-EN] "? Are you doing a header rewrite so it is easier on your end? May be a trick I don't know -- but I'm curious about :)
I use a template for new mails on each different mail list. The current openSUSE mail list server is unable to add a label on the subject, so I write it manually, for easier identification. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.5 (Laicolasse))
