[opensuse] strange problem with assigning partition
Hello: I have a very strange problem with mounting/assigning hard disk partiton. Please be patient, this will be a little bit verbous. I had a working openSUSE 11.2 system on a computer and I wanted to install it on another computer as well. Instead of starting a DVD installation I have copied (using rsync) the working 11.2 system's whole directory structure to the first partiton of a new hard disk. I used this hard disk in the new computer. I could use 11.2 install DVD to make 11.2 bootable (by grub) in the new computer. After this I could start the new computer with no apparent problems. The problem arose when I wanted to change grub for lilo on the MBR and lilo could not find the disk/partition. According to df -h the root partition is located on /dev/sda2; however the hard disk has only one partition, a primary partition, normally should be /dev/sda1. I don't understand why it is seen by 11.2 as /dev/sda2. cfdisk and fdisk show the partiton table as normal, that is /dev/sda1 is shown. If I mount /dev/sda1 to eg /mnt than it is clear that / (dev/sda2) and /mnt (dev/sda1) are the same directory structures. So it looks like a partiton assignement issue. Tha hard disk is a Samsung 500GB SATA hard disk, and it is the only hard disk installed in the computer. The BIOS shows this hard disk as 3rd master (first and second masters would be IDE drives). An other symptom was that the system messed up my USB flashdrive's directory structure/files. Except of these issues 11.2 it runs without visible errors, I can use the network, graphical window. Can it be that since this system was originally installed on other hardware, during boot a wrong driver is loaded which causes these sypmtomps? Any hint? Because of the way partitioning was done on the clone disk, it may be that its sda1 is using the table entry that starts at address 0x1CE instead of the one at 0x1BE. IOW, you may see all 00's until byte 0x1CE, where non-00's begin, instead of seeing them begin at 0x1BE. To confirm, you should see "83" (the type for a normal Linux native partition) at 0x1C2, not at 0x1D2. That "normally" needs not be. Run "fdisk -l /dev/sda", and then "file -s /dev/sda?". Copy the output here. And perhaps "mount" and "df".

No. Perhaps if you modify the partitions, and do not load the new table, or loading fails. This needs a reboot. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
