Try looking for package lx_sus24 in series d (or thereabouts). HTH, Chris
I have checked in the archives and this is the only reference I can see about installing VMware (wih the problem I have). I am having exactly the same problem, but I don't understand the Answer that was given, can anyone give me an idea of what this means?

Hi, Go to the SuSE Website. Go to the support Database. Do a search for VMWare. The third article that appears will tell u exactly how to solve the problem. It involves some kernel compilation, but is quite painless to do. Regards Q On Tue 02 Oct 01 11:14, will wrote:

As long as you have an internet connection next to your SuSE box to download the updated packages :-) I would have thought that including software that actually worked with the distribution would have been a priority. My opinion of SuSE as a distribution is going slowly downhill... Will.

SuSE is and will always be the best Linux Distribution...
In your opinion, I have yet to make my mind up fully and I will make my own mind up based on my experiences with it.
...that is why they are called the Linux Experts.

They call *themselves* the Linux experts. that

...you have to however weigh apples with apples...

Not with the free Mandrake disk I had, or the copy of redhat I installed. Is it too much to expect that when I *pay* for a Linux distro from SuSE that they have checked that the software that comes with it works? that
Microsoft is:
a). Incapable b). Unable c). No desire
to fix.
I use NT at work because I have to, I am installing SuSE, I will fix the VMware problem here, but because I don't have a net connection at home or a CD burner I am going to find it pretty difficult to fix the issue as I don't have 30 floppy disks to split the files onto or the time to reassemble the files when I get there. I was not saying Windows was better, I don't know why it had to be brought up, I certainly didn't mention it.
I would rather support a O/S, that acknowledges when something is wrong, creates a patch or fix, and releases it.
This is not an OS argument I don't think.
So personally I think you need to really look at what you are complaining about... ...and maybe rethink your criticism.
I bought a distro for the first time ever and it doesn't work as well as the ones I didn't have to pay for.
However if you feel that way still, it is a free world... ...I will however sleep very easy every night, knowing that all the servers that my department manage, will continue to be the best out there...
Free world, except I hear that the Yast2 part of SuSE is not open source... Not so free there. We run Linux on most of our servers. The best uptime is 5 years so I know about reliability, I was talking about the dissapointment that I paid for a distro and it didn't work properly.
...because they are running the best LINUX Distribution...
...SuSE is Sooperb!!!!
In your opinion. From what I have seen SuSE is OK. Will.

Mandrake and Redhat have a compiler which is known to be bugful. They have also their problems. For what I have understood of your question in the first post, you are missing what the lx_suse24 package is, right? Use yast2, installation packages => series d and you will find it. Sorry if misunderstanding, english is not my mothertongue. Praise

You hear wrong. On the cd/dvd I got there was full source of Yast 1 & 2. Don't confuse open source with GPL. GPL is open source, open source is not necessarily GPL. A program doesn't have to be GPL to get the benefits of 'all bugs are shallow...' regards Anders

correct me if I'm wrong, but since you bought SuSE, the CDs and DVD have the kernel source package you need (named lx_sus24). You don't need to download anything unless you want the most up-to-date kernel and source (officially 2.4.7). There is one additional step involved before you can compile VMware modules (copy /boot/vmlinuz.{version.h, .config, autoconf.h} into the correct places in the kernel source tree). This information is either somewhere in SDB or from the mailing list (I know, it's not exactly fully searchable). VMware is third-party software, and it's not really SuSE's fault if VMware doesn't integrate as nicely as it could. SuSE does some things differently from Red Hat, but in my experience it simplifies many tasks if you have a good understanding of the Linux OS. I would hope you'll reserve further negative judgment of SuSE for the time being, as people on the list are willing to help you get grounded in it. :ml

Vmware has the 3.0 Workstation Beta out for free right now. It works flawlessly under my stock SuSE 7.2 install recently. I installed Win2000 & OpenBSD in it so far without problems. /Dee -----Original Message----- From: Man Ly [mailto:manly@surfbest.net] Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2001 8:30 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] Installing VMware will wrote:

We did, but with kernel 2.2.X as *that* was the default kernel for 7.2.

I did a plain vanilla default install of SuSE 7.2 Personal out of the box and it is running 2.4.4

My experience so far with the distro. It is the only one I have paid for so far and the only one I have had problems with. I am going to keep at it though. Will.
