Hi Group: I want to upgrade my kernel from the current 2.2.16 to 2.4.3. I downloaded file "linux-2.4.3.tar.gz" from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/ and I was wondering if someone could confirm the following: 1) is this the right file, 2) is this the only file I need to properly upgrade my kernel, and 3) would you recommend using an rpm (or some other kind of zipped format) because it will jive better with Suse 7.0? Thanks for your help. Mike michael.flug@snet.net

Yes.

Yes, but make sure you are using modutils-2.4.2. There is a RPM available from SuSE.

There are no 2.4.3 kernel RPMs. If you want the latest, then you have to compile it yourself. The kernel has a README file that provides a lot of information regarding installation and troubleshooting. Good luck! - v -- Victor R. As well as the latest modutils, you'll need to make sure you have at least certain version of a number of other programs, e.g. if you use ppp, you'll need an updated pppd. You can find the details of exactly what version of things you need in the file: /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes assuming you untarred the kernel to /usr/src/linux.

For kernels, I always stick with tarballs - habit I suppose. It won't harm your system. Bye, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
