Hi. I need compress utility and I haven't on my suse8.0 dvd. Do you know any suse rpm source where I can find it? Thanx! Blackimp
gzip and bzip are two excellent ones. I don't know about bzib, but gzip should be installed by default since just about everything else on Linux is gzipped. There is also the Linux compress command. On 7 Oct 2002 at 21:25, Blackimp wrote:

It's mandatory for me to use 'compress' utility and not gzip or any other else. I can't find it on dvd, where can I? thanx
You are correct. I have it installed on my SuSE 7.3 system but not on SuSE 8.0. However, you can easily get it from freshmeat (http://www.freshmeat.net). I am surprised that it was not on Productivity/Archiving/Compression. On 7 Oct 2002 at 21:34, Blackimp wrote:

compress was dropped because of patent issues--I don't think any Linux distribution ships it anymore. gunzip can uncompress .Z files though. -- -ckm

Actually, that was considered and the consensous was that it would piss customers off if something that claimed to /usr/bin/uncompress didn't behave like it. Damned if you do... In any case, gzip won't create .Z files, only uncompress them. If someone needs compress for some reason the old 7.3 packages should build without too much trouble on 8.1. ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/7.3/suse/zq1/compress.spm -- -ckm
