Well, no matter how hard I try, changing permissions, recreating folders, moving plugins into respective users home dirs, I cannot get any media from webpages to work. No flash, no realplayer media, etc. This is quite disconcerting especially since I have not ever had this much difficulty getting these to work in prior releases. I am running 8.1. By and large 8.1 running much more smoothly and faster, automatically detects and adds hardward, etc... However, I'm at a complete loss as to why certain things, such as the pluggins don't work no. I see realplayer trying to load for a split second or two and then nothing. When a check "about pluggins" in either moz or netscape it says they're all installed and active. I have made sure that the associations match to the best of my ability but no go. So, What gives? If one of the SuSE crew happens to read this I do believe that others on the list are having similar problems. I would like to have the content ability of my browsers, and the machine in general, working as they should. Anything to shed some light on this frustrating situation will be happily appreciated. TIA, Curtis
Hmmm... Flash may have the same issue that Java plugins do under 8.1. The issue being that 8.1 is based on gcc 3.2, but a number of things that SuSE doesn't have source for (like Java and the Flash) are built with older compilers and have issues linking with shared libraries. - Herman Curtis Rey wrote:

(1) Put this into a file and name it libc++mem.c: // From http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=124006 void *__builtin_new(int size) {return (void*)malloc(size);} void *__builtin_vec_new(int size) {return __builtin_new(size);} void *__builtin_delete(void *ptr) {free(ptr);} void *__builtin_vec_delete(void *ptr) {__builtin_delete(ptr);} (2) Compile it with: gcc -shared -o libc++mem.so libc++mem.c (3) Put it it /usr/local/lib and do a ldconfig (4) Edit the script that starts your browser and put this line: export LD_PRELOAD=$LD_PRELOAD:/usr/local/lib/libc++mem.so just before the line that starts your browser. This will work for all plugins with the exception of JAVA. Charles -- "Linux poses a real challenge for those with a taste for late-night hacking (and/or conversations with God)." (By Matt Welsh)

But I can say the only problem I had was with JAVA. Flash worked fine. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.

Another possible solution is to install mozilla rpm from 8.0 directory. (I mean /ftp.suse.com/projects/mozilla/1.1/8.0) Works fine for me on 8.1 system. Regards, -Kastus

The binary builds from mozilla.org take a few seconds to install and work with all the plugins I have available, including java and macromedia, without any need to change permissions or do any other file manipulation other than tarring the plugins folder, putting it aside and untarring it again when installing a later binary build. Give that a go - if you don't like non-rpm material on your system you can always get rid of /usr/local/mozilla once this slightly irritating phase of compiler mismatches is resolved. I'm sure you can do it lots of other ways, including compiling things for yourself, but this route works just fine if you don't choose to spend the time.
