Any diffs between 9.2 DVD (purchased) and 9.2 DVD iso on FTP servers
Just wondering if there is any discernable difference, such as different packages not being included on the DVD ISO download. Since it's being called an "Eval" version on Novell's/SUSE's site, I wasn't sure. Greg

Hi James Hi List Is this really an enormous change? If you've got the bandwidth to conveniently download multi-gigabyte DVD iso's, can't you also just install via ftp? The 'missing' packages are available on the mirrors, they're just not included in the iso they've created. - Carl p.s. James: I'm a big fan! How much groveling is it going to take to get Gnome 2.8 on SuSE 9.2? (grovel grovel) :-)

Not much, it's just a matter of me finding the time to * Sort out the gotchas on my TODO List on 9.1 (eg the curl packages) * Install 9.2 & do all the updates * Build all the GNOME packages The last stage will take at least two days working full time, so you see the problem, but I fully hope for it to happen. Then I can start getting ready for 2.10 - due in March ;) -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org GNOME for SuSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms

Thanks. This is helpful. Quite a difference really, even for use on my notebook. I think I will continue to purchase the distro. Greg

I don't understand ever releasing a Linux distro without: apache2 apcupsd bind - and utilities dhcp-server, client, etc. ethereal php4, etc.. If james list is correct, how in the heck would the machine ever obtain an IP? I haven't looked at the ftp package list, but surely it must have dhcp included. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. It appears you think all, or even most, Linux users run systems used as servers. I strongly doubt that's the case.

Maybe I'm just old school, but every distro I've ever bought or downloaded up until very recently has always included the capability to be either a server or workstation or both. Starting with mdk 7 or Suse 8. Granted, the improvement with the ftp mirror and update setup has largely rendered this argument moot. You can simply grab the additional packages you need. My point was that a large number of folks view the server packages as 'core' applications to any distro and it just seems strange that they weren't included There certainly wasn't a space argument to be raised. There is 1.6G of free space on the single layer DVD.
