[opensuse] Few modern hardware issues
Just installled 10.3 (AMD64) and managed to overcome 1st Nvidia X server problem (using yast). I thought to ask some questions before trying things (as my last generation hardware experience since pentium 4 is only a week old). Is OpenSuse 10.3 is SATA hot-pluggable? Can I install SATA DVDRW instead of an IDE drive without any issues? Can I run desktop effects with Geforce 7200 GS? (not in XGL's DB) How is Nvidia SLI on OpenSuse? (just to know for the future) The AMD64 version seems to be really CPU aggressive, in fact it uses the CPU so intensively until the a total freeze of the computer (never used that small reset button until now). All these freezes were during multitasking and yast software installation, maybe a bug. Also got very HEAVY memory leak on firefox (800MB of RAM) when doing NOTHING. I would imagine it is. This has been supported in libata for some time. The quality of the hot plugging depends on the hardware. Intel's SATA hardware seems to allow the worst hot plugging. Something about a lack of information it provides when a disk is removed. Of course, we use systems with said intel SATA controllers. What we have found is that one should remove the disk, wait a bit (we suggest 20-30 seconds) and then insert the new disk. Look at /var/log/messages to see if the removed disk is sensed, as well as the added disk. We use hot swapped SATA disks in a system with 4 drive bays. We expect a disk in a specific drive bay to always be mounted the same way. So, we have a udev rule that allows this. IIRC, we had to enable SATA AHCI in the BIOS so that the SATA was in the correct mode to provide info we could use to determine the slot the disk was in. We do this in a 10.1 system with an updated (by us) libata. Still, that libata is at least a year old and it does hot swapping. I look forward to trying this on a 10.3 system. Hm, how much memory the system has? I guess that yast had too little memory due to the running firefox and intensive swapping caused that the machine was very slow. So I advice to close all memory intensive applications before starting yast (and you can try to extend swap space if it's not large enough).
