SPAM: SuSE 10.1 + VMware /dev/rtc problem + ASUS P5GD2 Premium Audio
Hi all, When I run VMware Workstation 5.5.2 build-29772, and boot an image with a Linux 2.6.x kernel on it, VMware issues a error message that says it cannot open /dev/rtc (Device or resource busy) and these lines ge to /var/log/messages: rsantos kernel: /dev/vmmon[6733]: host clock rate change request 19 -> 1001 rsantos kernel: /dev/vmmon[6733]: /dev/rtc open failed: -16 After trying to find out what application was using /dev/rtc I found out that if switch off asla ( rcalsasound stop ), all goes well. Then I went to the boot log and found out this error messages: <3>ALSA sound/core/control.c:635: BUG? (info->access == 0) <4> [pg0+958998359/1069712384] snd_ctl_ioctl+0x463/0x9ea [snd] <4> [__link_path_walk+2868/3198] __link_path_walk+0xb34/0xc7e <4> [__handle_mm_fault+1097/2026] __handle_mm_fault+0x449/0x7ea <4> [nameidata_to_filp+25/40] nameidata_to_filp+0x19/0x28 <4> [pg0+958997236/1069712384] snd_ctl_ioctl+0x0/0x9ea [snd] <4> [do_ioctl+28/94] do_ioctl+0x1c/0x5e <4> [vfs_ioctl+588/606] vfs_ioctl+0x24c/0x25e <4> [sys_ioctl+81/104] sys_ioctl+0x51/0x68 <4> [sysenter_past_esp+84/121] sysenter_past_esp+0x54/0x79 and it keeps repeating it in /var/log/messages for a while until it stops returning that error. After the errors cease to appear, VMware still shows the same error... I Have an Asus P5GD2 Premium with integrated audio controller. This should be a SuSE10.1, Kernel or alsa problem, IMHO. Has anyone had any experience with this Hardware/Software ? Has anyone got the same error on SuSE10.1 with Asus P5GD2 Premium audio enabled ? I'm using Kernel Linux rsantos 2.6.16.21-0.25-smp #1 SMP Tue Sep 19 07:26:15 UTC 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Thanks in advance for all your help. -- Rui Santos http://www.ruisantos.com/ They that would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither one of them.

Me too. VMWare complained today (for the first time that I've noticed): Oct 13 14:47:02 ballard kernel: /dev/vmmon[6147]: host clock rate change request 83 -> 1043 Oct 13 14:47:02 ballard syslog-ng[2489]: Changing permissions on special file /dev/xconsole Oct 13 14:47:02 ballard syslog-ng[2489]: Changing permissions on special file /dev/tty10 Oct 13 14:47:02 ballard kernel: /dev/vmmon[6147]: /dev/rtc open failed: -16 Oct 13 15:17:43 ballard kernel: /dev/vmmon[6147]: host clock rate change request 1043 -> 83 I don't see the ALSA error messages you mention at boot, though. I haven't yet tried switching ALSA off, since I've only seen that RTC error from VMWare for the first time today. It didn't appear at startup, but suddenly when I was using Windows XP Home inside VMWare. I legally own workstation 4.52, but i am using the free server that is now available. try it, your probs might go away. i recall the /dev/rtc error on workstation about a month ago, have not seen it with the server. btw, you might want to backup your virtual machine before you upgrade them, just in case there are problems or the freebie stops beeing free:) d.

Have you tried disconnecting the sound device at the VM tab?

Have you tried disconnecting the sound device at the VM tab? Yes, I did that... With no success, I'm afraid... ?
