Since SuSE 9.1 UTF-8 coding is used by default instead of ISO coding. But why? What are the advantages? Even on the shipped CDs not all files are properly converted. Fabian

Because unicode (utf-8 is just one of several ways to encode unicode) allows to encode all languages, so for instance file names in Japanese, German and Tzech can be displayed correctly (given suitable fonts) at the same time, which is impossible with the ISO encodings that cover only a small part of the languages. No need anymore for switching character encodings depending on the language you want to use. Philipp

UTF-8 supports all languages in this world, ISO doesnt. It is under progress, I have not use 9.1 yet, I can only guess that in the later versions more packages will be available in UTF-8. -- http://www.fastmail.fm - mmm... Fastmail...
